  • Resmed Quattro FX - Rave! Rave! Rave!

Just looking at the on-line photos, you can see this is a good mask - but try it on and immediately you know this is a winner!

The three sizes only come with a medium headgear - so my top adjustment is a little tight and the bottom just a little tighter than as large as possible. With those settings, the mask 1. cannot give you a sore nose as the contact is so feather light and 2. I don't think it knows how to leak - I couldn't persuade it withouit unclipping a strap!

Full face but small (so reduced lift at your pressure), no forehead rest. The cushion is so comfortable, soft. A fantastic design. A ninety second trial moves this mask to the top of my preferred list.

I'll review when I've slept in it but take it from me already, for full-facers, this is a must have mask! I've forgotten about waiting for a full face SleepWeaver already!

Bizarrely, the measuring tool to discover which size mask you need comes with the mask - same packet. So, from the bridge of your nose to the dimple/hollow in your chin is the measurement: small is 9cm; medium is 10cm; large is 11cm. (sheet of paper with a hole cut out for your nose, cut circles of those diameters.) Only headgear size currently available is the one that comes with the mask - medium.

How long to persuade the NHS to provide these masks? At £139, they're a little more privately than the Quattro.

    Looks good to me

Might be an alternative to the Liberty Mirage I currently use; normal full face masks pivot on my cheek bones; this one might not have that problem. Would need to 'try before I buy' though.

Apparently, you can drive a truck over the FX masks and they'll pop back into shape. Quite nifty. Keen to hear how you get on, ideally backed up with stats, graphs, video's and the lot!

If trying to prove the above, can I suggest you take the mask off first please.

                  Difficult to review

There I was, trying out the mask and next thing - it was morning! I did have time to note that Resmed have at last sorted the headgear anchor points so that they lay flat - none of the sticky-out wings that catch the pillow and dis-lodge the mask. This means that you can sleep in the middle of the pillow and turn over without problem/leaks.

In fact, with vertical hose support and a pillow that is not too deep, sleeping with this mask is 95% as it was when I was very young. First night and I slept all the way through without any remembered problems.

I'll do stats when I get home.

Sounds good - but sounds remarkably similar in design to the other full-face soft masks like the ZZZ mask and it's brothers.

Nice to know the headgear keeps everything together well - what's the venting like?

                        Stats - of a sort

On the plus side - Quattro FX for a second night.

On the -ve side - early rise that morning; strange, single bed; no humidifier; no heated hose; no epr.

Result - ten and a half hours sleep, one interruption.

I really had the impression that I was making good a sleep deficit. This mask is so seriously good! I reckon most newbies would take to it like a duck to the millpond.

Noticed two nit-picking 'faults'. 1. If I slide my head across the pillow, it causes the lower strap to pull the mask slightly - there is a need to 'place' one's head upon the pillow. 2. Probably due to using a headgear a size too small - not to mention fat cheeks - I had lines across said cheeks when I woke, gone after a half hour.

But nothing, oh! nothing, can detract from the quantity and quality of sleep afforded by this mask. I have a late night coming up - Edita Gruberova and Elina Garanca - so I'm worried about waking in time to get to the airport!

                        TF

PS Symmit - look at the photos, it's nothing like a ZZZZZ et al.

Glad it's working for you - was comparing the principal - soft silicone cushion, soft shell and no headstraps.

There's a funny story about my last night about to pop up elsewhere...

Turns out the red lines left by the mask straps were not caused by headgear tension or design per se - but by the hotel pillow being hard enough (and my head heavy enough) to impress the straps onto my cheeks. I hadn't noticed the marks after the one night's use I had before travelling but put that down to early morning rush. However - no marks this morning after sleeping in my own bed with a soft pillow. And boy! yet again - what a delicious, deep sleep!

Stats are ready to download - coming soon.

                              Stats

                              First night back at home:

Great to have C-Flex, humidifer, heated hose and pillow music again.

                              AHI = 1

                              Basal SpO2 94% - min. 91% - av. low 92.9%

                              Bpm 77.8 - av. low 63

Small leak at 16.5 cm, easily fixed by moving head. When trying for an extra 40 winks, lower straps unfixed, mask refitted (tilting technique for these masks) and straps re-fixed without interrupting air supply.

This is a must try mask for mouth breathers! It gives me long, deep sleep with minimal or no discomfort and virtually no 'typical CPAP problems'.
