  • How come you`ve seen your graphs

Hi all - I see some of you are commenting on your sleep studies and graphs. Were you given copies?

I was shown mine briefly during my hospital visit. It looked so interesting that I asked for a copy but was told that patients aren`t allowed copies because they belong to the consultant. I thought this was a bit off to say the least but accepted it, so how come some of you have managed to get hold of your sleep study results?

    Hi Patsy - and Welcome

We're making our own, mostly using cheap recording oxymeters from Ebay! And some of us have the interface software for our APAP machines so can download those too.

Thank you Symmit - sounds interesting - but surely you have to have all the proper equipment to measure oxygen sats, respirations, brain activity etc?

I have since been told that anyone can have copies of stuff from their NHS files and it was totally wrong of them to have said I can`t. So, armed with this knowledge, I will be making sure I get copies even if I do have to make a special application.

"They belong to the consultant" - I thought rubbish like that was finally disappearing from the NHS. You should have said - "Oh I didn't realize he had sleep apnea too. You shouldn't be showing me his graphs."

Ha ha - I wish I`d been quick enough to think of saying that, but my feelings of relief and gratitude were in the ascendancy for quite some while and in no mood to challenge anything. Not to worry though, cos I`m getting my gander up good and proper now.

                  Cost

it is £10.00 to look at your files but £50.00 if you want copies, your probably better of asking for a digital copy it could be cheaper!

When I found out that the NHS cannot withhold information from you from your file, I said I wanted a copy of my graph and asked the technician to go and get the relevant application form so I could fill it in. She said there was no need and she would just go and make a copy.

Did it cost you anything and did you get the data files from your machine as well?

                            Hello Sparticus
It was the original graph from my sleep study. I have only just got a machine so have never had its contents read by them. To begin with I was told by the technician that I wasn`t allowed to have a copy of my sleep study graph as it belonged to the consultant ! I accepted this because I was in a vulnerable state at the time. But, it was utter rubbish of him to say that of course.
On this Freedom of Information website below I see that `in some cases` a charge of £10 can be made and sometimes £50 for health and educational info. But I would have thought it pretty extreme, and mean, for them to charge £50. I suppose it all depends on the effort involved. In my case the woman just walked into the next office and made a copy of one A4 sheet (which was in colour). I would have been prepared to pay a couple of quid for this, but she did it for free.
