      I also wonder what fire regulations think of this. In a panic, it seems like it's not that easy to climb out of.

        Its not his arms that need stopping Some people may disagree with this statement but out of all the illnesses Im quite please I have OSA its such an interesting illness especially when it involves sleep, wearing a mask at night is nothing compared to what others go through. Just wait till scientist build an interface for the brain and plug you in

            Iron Maiden?

            It looks to me like you wouldn't ever sleep again once closed in her. I always wondered where they stuck the hot irons in--and where the blood drained out. But I'll let someone esle try her out! x Berneta

              Ive just come across an article which I beleive to be incorrect, here it is an it was written by Gerrard Mackensie:

              Proper sleep phases
              During the average session of sleep, a person will experience five proper sleep phases. This means that as you sleep, your body is actually experiencing different sensations through those five sleep phases.

              The first of the proper sleep phases is... wakefulness! No, actually, this is more like phase zero. When we are experiencing wakefulness, our brains exhibit high brain waves, known as beta waves which allow us to consciously function day-to-day.


              The first proper sleep phase is known as phase 1 sleep. During phase 1 sleep, our brain exhibits a combination of alpha and theta brain waves, and our bodies begin to relax and prepare for sleep. This sleep phase is commonly experienced while we are daydreaming, 'zoning out' or feeling drowsy during the day.


              The second of the proper sleep phases is very interesting, it is where our brain exhibits sudden bursts of activity. Like the phase 1 sleep, people in the second proper sleep phase are still considered awake, and phase 2 is also a transitional phase into proper sleep. The brain is attempting to 'switch off' in preparation for proper sleep. If someone is awoken during the second sleep phase, then they often don't remember having fallen 'asleep'.


              The third and fourth proper sleep phases are considered 'deep sleep' - this is when you're asleep and if you're woken up, you know you've been asleep. It is at this phase that the brain exhibits a combination of delta and theta brain waves. Our bodies physiologically adapt to sleeping conditions - we experience drops in blood pressure, heart rate and respiration, and our body repairs any muscle damage encountered during the day.


              The final and fifth of the proper sleep phases is REM sleep. REM is an acronym for Rapid Eye Movement, and very little is known by the scientific community regarding the purpose or activity that occurs during this fifth proper sleep phase. Experiments conducted in the 1950s uncovered that when people were in this phase of sleep, their eyes would move very rapidly, and if woken up, close to 95% of people would report having been dreaming. Thus, REM sleep is also known as dream sleep. The brain exhibits extraordinary activity during this final proper sleep phase - in fact, it is the most active of the proper sleep phases.


              And there you have it - the five proper sleep phases.


              I find this to be inacurate for one it doesnt mention the phase which you are paralysed and also the scientists beleive now that dreaming has a purpose of problem solving. Test were carried out to see why we dream and they found out that the brain is actually sorting out our problems and this is why the first dream of the night dealing with a new problem is always the strongest, which come in the form of a nighmare and as the problem is sorted by the brain then the dream becomes less servere. If a problem is very difficult to solve the brain will keep the same nightmare untill it can find a path for solving the problem. You can have many dreams during a night each one getting less intense but also if you are woken while in REM then you will remember what you were dreaming about but if your woken in any of the other phases you wont remember a thing. A fasinating subject.

                I was just wondering if anyone has suffered from this disorder, incase you dont know what it is its called "Shift Work Sleep Disorder" a person can suffer from many different symtoms, its all to do with your circadian rhythm, I will turn to the pro's for an explanation for you, better than me waffling lol

                Working the graveyard shift forces the body to operate counter to its circadian rhythm, the internal clock that tells us when we should be sleeping and when we should wake. Few people adapt easily or completely to such schedules. It’s not uncommon for such people to suffer from shift work sleep disorder (SWSD).

                SWSD is characterized by insomnia and excessive sleepiness. People with the disorder are more accident prone, irritable, and less able to concentrate – none of which will help win Employee of the Month status. Ibrahim says that lack of sleep is also linked to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mood disorders.

                Despite the toll that such shifts can take, somebody has to work them, from the waitress at the all-night diner to the on-call plumber, as well as police, firefighters, fiber optics engineers, and, of course, physicians and other hospital staff.

                Karen O’Connell, MD, has worked from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the emergency room at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for 2 1/2 years. She says she will never give it up, but she believes she’ll never fully adjust.

                "It’s a very different lifestyle," says O’Connell, a 37-year-old mother of two young children. "A physician’s schedule doesn’t lock me in with what’s natural."

                Handling Odd Working Hours
                O’Connell and Brewster are night people. And night owls, Ibrahim says, thrive on the graveyard shift. For everyone else, it helps to have a few strategies to make working those odd hours easier. Here are five to try:

                Shift Slowly: Any changes to your circadian rhythm should be made gradually, Ibrahim says. It takes at least two days – and perhaps as much as a week – to adjust to a major shift in schedule. Make sure your boss knows this. Ideally, Ibrahim says, your boss will give you two or more days to ease into your new hours. O’Connell says: "The human body doesn’t adapt to going back and forth" between schedules.

                I have now worked this shift for over 9 years and just like the others wouldnt change it for the world. It suits my lifestyle and with always being a night owl I hate getting up in the mornings, I'd rather be going to bed
