They say that there are 3 stages of sleep but a person with osa doesnt get to the dreamstate because of the apneas preventing them. yesterday I had an hour before work and had amazing dreams, I wasnt wearing my mask? This should not have happend. The apneas should have prevented me from drifting deep enough to reach REM SLEEP (Dreamstate)(Rapid Eye Movement) Where were my apneas? Also I did feel quite refreshed after my nap. I feel that cpap or apap does have a cure property when used long enough, it seems that my body is sometimes working properly when I sleep. I wish I had recorded my sleep some how as no apneas would have been recorded, strange dont you think?

Dreamstate
Hi Graham, its possible that for that hour your sleep was ok. We ususally don't have apneas constantly--if so we'd probably die. I read one time that people go insane or die if they don't get REM sleep. Most of us manage "some" good sleep most nights or days--as it is usually years before anyone discovers that they have Sleep Apnea. Apparently we manage just enough REM sleep to keep us going. So your Dreamstate for an hour was probably nothing unusual. Maybe someone more "in the know" has a better answer. Just count your blessings and use your CPAP until another clinic test tells you that you don't need it. Happy New Year to you and your Family and to ALL. x Berneta

I used to think that I never had a dream and that didn;t change with using cpap. Now I have stopped using it I am getting them. It is all very weird.

I always thought that was one of the clues for OSA. As there are 3 stages of sleep we are stuck in the first stages when the apneas (Apnoeas) kick in. So if this now is not true at what point do the apneas start? If stage one is nodding off and stage 2 is paralysis and finally stage 3 is REM (according to the pro's but dont want to get too technical here) Surely we wont get passed stage 1 because if we hit stage 2 and start apneas then how can our body react to this and wake us up if we are in paralysis stage 2. If we are dreaming then the conclusion can only be that apneas occur when we are in stage 3

As always, it'll be different for diffeent people. You'd have to do a full PSG in order to determine which sleep phases your really reach, and wether you get REM.
Some will OSA so bad, they even snore in the day when breathing. If they drop off, you can bet your house they'll have OSA happening immediately and indeed won't reach sleep phase.
Others have milder OSA and this only manifests when the throat muscles are totally relaxed. That may only happen after dreaming, or on their back. So they get dreams on their side, as they don't get OSA on their side but when on their back they good have severe OSA and don't dream.
So yes, lack of dreaming can be a tell tale sign, but as always, it depends!
It's a combination of sleep positions, OSA severity etc.

I'll take that!
Thankyou I was about to broach that subject next because if I sleep in my normal position, no apneas but if I sleep on my back its severe. Maybe I could handcuff myself into one position and then I'd be cured! Crazy to think that because we roll in our sleep we are ill but if we could stay still we wouldnt have a problem, for some anyway.

Check out this gadget:
A simple device to stop you sleeping on your back may be a new treatment for sleep apnoea. New research shows that after three months, six out of ten patients who used the device had fewer symptoms

Some people will go to such great lengths to sort out their positional sleeping!

OMG
That kinda looks like a torture device from the Dark Ages. How could anyone get any sleep wearing that thing! I am also someone who gets the severe apneas if I try sleeping on my back--so my brain has learned over the years to shift from right side to left and back, without lingering on my back. Also most of my apneas occured during REM sleep--but now and then did not occur at all. The CPAP has nearly stopped them all--so since I have Central Apnea I have to figure it has to do with Pressure in my brain while in certain positions that reduce blood supply. The CPAP takes care of that by increasing my oxygen supply.. My AHI is 0.5 now. I feel great. If it takes years to build up matter and bacteria in the CPAP--I will not be in a rush to get an Ozone Bag. In a couple years they will probably come up with something that works better than the Ozone Bag. Like maybe a mild zap of radiation the we can do ourselves easily. They radiate fruit that is imported. Sounds likely to me to work with a CPAP. I was also wondering how it could work, if the CPAP was not running--so was happy to hear that. Thanks. I also wrap my Cpap in Chiffon to help keep out dust in the daytime and clean my filters regularly. I am due to change the second white filter though. Hey Honey--Handcuffs could be fun! But I don't know how much sleep you would get! LOL. x Berneta

Before you rush to buy .....
just look at that contraption! The pillow is hiding a problem for PAPers - there has to be a 90-ish corner between the two boards. That means the pillow is raised at each end with your head in the 'corner'. Compare that to a PAP Pillow with its cut-outs to make sure the mask is left un-touched and thus not moved on your face.
