  • I know I'll regret this, but ......

It's all silvercarper's fault really - starting me with Ashbeck water. Anyway - what do we put in our SinuPulse nasal washer-outers?

Till now I've been using filtered hot and cold tap water, but now I won't put filtered water into my kettle (don't want to contaminate the Ashbeck). But I can't remeber why I started doing that rather than hot and cold water straight from the tap - fear of calcium encrustation?

I can't think why I shouldn't use tap water to flush my sinuses but feel vaguely uncomfortable in doing so. What do other people use?

I use unfiltered tap water, but boil it and let it cool first.

We are lucky to live in n area where the water is soft and low in other chemicals. The chlorine in water straight from the tap isn't nice to have up your nose though, so you need to let it stand for an hour to let it boil off..or boil it to force it off quicker. Note of warning though, you need to let it stand open, not in a b boil away

        Im not Knocking but......

I still dont see the point in this, doesnt mean Im knocking it as I have never had the need to try it. Also has anyone thought of how dangerous this could be with your sinuses being so close to your actual brain? Is there a risk to ones health. Just goes to show what I know lol

Seems its a very common practice, definatley not my cup of T.

              Germs?

I can understand the need to flush the sinus area, and its been done for thousands of years by people of various nations, However I do believe that people should take precautions to use properly sterilized water made into a mild saline solution. And should use it only if they have a serious sinus problem--not just as a matter of routine. Each person has to determine for themselves if they need that. Its probably no more dangerous to the brain than taking a swim--and swimming pools have all kinds of harsh chemicals, bacteria, and human waste. Lakes, ponds, creeks and oceans have all kinds of bacteria. So I think its more of the "idea" of doing the Neti Pot or Sinu-PLus that doesn't appeal to a lot of people. Anyone ever get soda pop or other bubbly drinks up the nose while drinking it--now thats a lot of fun! LOL, Berneta

Thanks, Berneta - you give the reassurance I was seeking by reminding me of the stuff that goes up my nose when I swim, etc. Also, as I live in a city, I breathe in all sorts of rubbish and exhaust fumes. I think I'm right in saying our sinuses are there to clean up the air going down to our lungs?

                    looks awful but...

SinuPulse is no more uncomfortable than brushing your teeth and takes about the same length of time.

Can't see the problem with using tap water (unless its hard water which will clog the pump); its what most people use when brushing their teeth after all.

There is a big difference - mucus membrane! your mouth doesn't have them whereas you nose does, so the nose is a bit more sensitive and delicate.

Myself, I find if a use water straight from the tap in the sinupulse, the chlorine irritates it and makes me sneeze and my nose run afterwards.

Leave the water to settle and degas for an hour...lovely.

From my experience, the best solution is to boil the water fresh from the tap, mix in the salts (they mix easier when it is hot) and then leave it to stand to cool. by the time it has cooled to a present temperature to use, the chlorine has boiled off.

                        Cleaning it out!

Hi TF--I think you are absolutely right about having a clean nose. A lot of nasty stuff goes in there all the time and cleaning it out once in a while could keep it out of the lungs---not to mention out of our noses where it may cause drippy noses, sores, sneezing fits, sore throats, and stomach problems. Most people even have Staph, Strep, Yeast, Mold spores, Animal dander, Pollen, and all kinds other things that are in Smog. Things that can cause all kinds of problems if they migrate to other areas of the body. A lot of whether or not you need to clean out the nose has to do with your own needs, depending on where you live, and if you swim or have pets, where you work,(imagine if you work in a chicken producing factory). And if you have sinus problems from allergies. Even pepper up the nose is not fun, and causes a reaction. Our noses have purpose other than just taking time to smell the roses. Its all a matter of choice, Have a good day-- XOX Berneta

To extend the machine's life, the purer, the better.

For your sinus cavities, you will also want quite pure water. 99% will flush straight out so in that sense, it could be motor oil, but if anything remains, you don't want that to be infested with anything.

By the way, did you guys see the new SinuPulse website, with pages dedicated to the many topics it helps with?

Dont you think that in todays climate we are getting too clinical and clean? How long will it be before the common cold kills us? It would take an awfull lot to make me shove things in places they are not meant to go, we are not designed to shove things up our noses, do you clean your bowels out if you get the runs, shove a hose up there and clean them out, I dont think so! So why bother with your nose?

                              Not IN

Hi, do you drink anything carbonated? The body was made to expell carbon dioxide-- not to take it in. So "not putting things into the body that don't belong there", expands to cover a lot of things. Like alcohol--we are supposed to get that from eating fresh fruit--not from drinking it from a bottle or can (Glass, Pitcher, etc) We have learned to do a lot of things over the years--that we would not have done when our ancestors first stood up. (And most humans probably found that to be outrageous too!) LOL. xx Berneta
