Oximeters

Can you recommend a reasonable oximeter from Ebay. I just want to find out how many times my oxygen levels dip to apnoea level during the night as I am not tolerant of CPAP. I am using a mandibular device (just an old one I had for now). If it looks successful I will request the NHS clinic to give me that option. Apparently they are supplied on the NHS.

Hi Patsy,

If you want to record your blood-sats during the course of a night, you need a finger-pulse oximeter that records the data while you're asleep.

Currently, Amazon are selling the device you need; go to Amazon, Health and Beauty and put in wrist watch finger pulse oximeter.

Having looked on eBay and Amazon, ALl I can say is that now is not a good time to buy!

This one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Finger-Oxime...141365&sr=8-20 was on eBay for £80 not long ago. It is a popular model with members.

You could try emailing Contec direct as I did. They offered me a good price.

Because they know people will pay over the odds when it comes to their health. Look at the Sleepweaver mask - I suppose you are paying for the research and development - the materials and production costs certainly don't come up to £100 or whatever it is.

The prices of medical equipment are so high, for us patients, at least, because we will only ever buy one item. That's just one product, packed and shipped, where the cost of packing and shipping is a hefty proportion of the suppliers' cost, and the supplier is not the manufacturer.

The supplier needs to attract wholesale, 'bulk' i.e. NHS orders to make it worthwhile. And to secure NHS business and the like he must offer very attractive discounts and incentives.

I reckon the NHS would certainly pay less than half the price we pay for medical equipment. And they need all the help they can get, don't they?

Add CE marking to it. Just to get the paperwork in order, after you've done trials etc. of your medical equipment, sets you back huge numbers. And for what it's worth, the cloth mask is no cheaper to make than any silicone or gel mask. The basic materials are all quite affordable, but the paperwork is what adds to the price. And as Richard mentions, the quantities play a role too.
