  • Do I still need to use CPAP, not sure!

    Hi all,

I've started using CPAP about a month ago, my sleep study showed 98 events when on my back and 18 when sleeping on the side, I am 39 yo and I do snore very heavily to the point where people asked me to get checked

I wasn't convinced about my sleep study as I had to use sleeping pills on that day and my pillow was not thick enough to sleep on back or side as I am stomach sleeper. Also I struggled to sleep properly because of the devices I had to wear.

However I was offered CPAP and decided to try it for some time.

Started with pressure of 8.5 and philips dreamwear nasal pillow, struggled a lot with it unless I sleep on my back, AHI was about 3 (5 was the max I had in one night)
After two weeks switched to Resmed N20 mask and felt it was much more comfortable and need much less tightening compared to dreamwear. And finally I can sleep on my side!

At the same time I started to use Beconase spray and reduced the pressure to 6.5, now my AHI is always 1 (in last week)

I started to question do I really need to use CPAP, it is possible that my main issue was congestion! isn't 6.5 too low? and I am getting only 1 event, in theory I think the pressure should he tuned down a bit.
Any suggestions or ideas or things I should try next? I don't want to get used to the machine if I didn't really needed it in the first place.

    Thanks,
    Meto

    Good Morning,

    Thank you for your post.

The target AHI (events per hour) with a CPAP machine is 5 or under. If your AHI is 5 or under then it shows that CPAP therapy is working well for you,

The only way to test your sleep apnoea would be to not use the CPAP machine for 5 nights and then do another sleep test.

With regards to your pressure settings, this is something you need to discuss with your consultant. You should not change any settings unless they advise you to do so.
