I may not be an inventor but I think this idea has some merit. There are new systems coming onto the market that uses suction to keep the airway open, no mask just a mouth piece with a suction tube its called Winx Therapy System.

Well, why cant we take this further a use a completely new way of opening the airway, no masks no tubes, mouth pieces or the like but a simple collar! (I hope I don't lose you here lol) A tens machine uses small pulses to activate the muscles (makes them contract etc) Why cant this tech be used in designing a collar that stimulates the throat and tongue to stay open? I think if this could be designed then sleep apnea would be so simple to treat.

I think you will find they have been experimenting using a small electric current to keep the throat open. It looked promising, but I have not heard anything for quite some time now. It would be great to just put on a little band round your neck and turn it on to keep the throat open.
I don't like the idea of it going faulty though!!!

The Winx, I would love to think that would work!
They would need a big container for all the saliva that would get sucked through the tube.
I think you would need to be a nose breather for this to have any chance of working as it would restrict breathing through your mouth
I also think it would lead to a very dry mouth, however I would love to be proved wrong.

I believe there at least two studies going on in this area.
One in the US is investigating embedding wiring and a pacemaker type device inside the body; it will detect airway collapse and stimulate the muscles to re-open the airway.
One in London using an external collar type device; they recently asked for volunteers in the London area to act as guinea pigs. Kath Hope is involved with this project.

The WINX device looks interesting but I suspect I would have the same problem I had with a MAD (Mandibular Advancement Device); to whit, keeping the damn thing in. Plus my mouth seems to want to dissolve anything put in it so something would have to collect the dribble.... Not a pretty thought.

I was drinking tea when I read that, I almost choked when I started laughing! Spat tea out everywhere!! Now I will have to find another top to put on.
