  • Are you "Scared", why?

It seems that some people are very apprehensive when they are told that they have sleep apnea. I thought it would be good to address those fears that some people have and to see what people fear the most.

I was relieved. It was good to have a possible diagnosis, and a non-surgical method of controlling it.

I totally agree, it was the same for me, knowing that there may be some hope for a normal life in the future.

I did try to add a poll to this but my time ran out lol.

Fear may have been to strong a word but it just seems that some newbies are very nervous about wearing masks and being able to breath etc. Maybe the one's that are long term like yourselves was just relieved to get treatment. I too couldn't wait to get my apap so I could get better.

Strange as it may sound I never realised I had a sleep problem. I went for a chest xray because of a breathing problem that continued after I gave up smoking. It was discovered that I had COPD but the consultant then started asking me questions about tiredness an sleep habits plus other things they decided to send me home and do a sleep test. The results where I has severe OSA 55/58 episodes per hour. So after the sleep test they sent me home with a machine to use for 2 weeks then went back for a permanent machine. I have to admit I just looked at that machine for a couple of months I could not bring myself to attach it to my face it scared me. After a bit of a talk to myself I started the treatment and I must admit after nealy 3 years I can sleep up to 8 hours a night my episodes came down to 0.5 and I feel great I never seem to feel tired and have a bit more energy all I need now are tips on how to lose weight with regards to being a type 2 diabetic who loves chocolate. (Another demon to fight.)

I've spoken to trainers but the only time I wrecked one was on a St Patricks day drinking/singing session. Not so much wrecked as dented a bit. His wife didn't allow him to play with me after that.

To go back to the original thread, 3 people I know are now on cpap and the first conversation was always "How can you sleep with a mask on, how can you breath". If you get good mask advice and a helpful sleep clinic that has a range of equipment or are able to test stuff yourself it makes a lot of difference. But how come a £100 mask here is $89.95 there !!
