  • Lung Capacity

I was wondering, does Cpap or Apap increase your lung capacity after using it for a while, I now find that I breath so much better than I did before. They must be some data on this somewhere but I cant seem to find it. It would be nice to hear if any peak flow reading have ever been took of before and after use.

I'm finding I breathe easier too, and I expect it's a product of many things - general health and fitness improvement, getting the sleep we need, and yes probably some improvement in lung function.

I've not had a cold, or any major congestion, since starting. Hay fever season could prove interesting though. And I've not started my traditional post-christmas cold/flu yet, let's hope it doesn't start!

For the first 5 or 6 years I had to attend a Chest Clinic in Aberdeen as well as attend Edinburgh. This was because Aberdeen was just getting going and the unit was part of the Chest Clinic (and still is) so when I went for an appointment I had to go through all the checks that other patients had to go through. Every time I attended the Chest Clinic a Peak Flow reading was taken, through this time there was no real difference to the readings. They don't do this now though as it has its own section. I also noticed I could breath easier, I put it down to not being so tired and that my tube ways were always clear of mucus (most of which landed in my stomach, I assume). Generally after a while on CPAP/APAP you do feel a lot better, not much wonder really as your body is so run down trying to cope with a lack of sleep.

Can't remember any specifi cfindings on capacity but plenty report lung/chest discomfort once on CPAP which appears to be due to stretching of the tissue in that region. Seems plausible to me.

Well on January 2nd I tried my new capacity out on the scottish mountains and I must admit, I didnt notice any difference in breathing other than gasping for more oxygen to cope with the christmas weigh gain.
