Well, here's my limited experience.
I've been stats chasing for the last two weeks, and for me, in my circumstances I'm staying on Auto.
It seems that my ODI is best with the system set at fixed pressure 11, flex level 2, so it varies between 9 exhale and 13 inhale. Any higher and I wake up in the night, any lower the 10 and I suffer (on paper). This is getting me down to an index of <1 most nights. Turn off flex and I'm setting it at 12-13 to get the numbers looking good, and it's not comfortable (have to go for a long ramp time and waking in the night is hard to get back to sleep)
However although the ODI isn't as good, it's still under 2 if the machine is in auto mode set at 8 minimum. And under 5 set at 4 minimum. The big difference is that at 8 I'm not waking in the night at all. At 4 the sleepweaver is uncomfortable and feels insecure.
So after 6 weeks of stat chasing I'm now happy to say I think I've found my ideal therapy, and it's where I was two weeks ago. Pressure 8 - Auto - sleepweaver. Humidifier at 3 or 4 (out of 5).
