  • Sleeping too Long?

Hi Everyone, In the last two weeks I have had a strange thing happen to me. When I started on CPAP in July I was sleeping 7 to 8 hours and getting along fine--felt great and full of energy with that much sleep, Now I am going to bed at 10 PM and waking at 5 am for a pit stop-- and going right back to sleep and not waking until 10 am or 12 noon. The only difference is that the nuts have been dropping on my roof all night and waking me up--but I do go right back to sleep without any trouble. (Other than irritation at being awakened.) Now I am wondering if its the constant waking up that is making me sleep longer, (Feel great the rest of the next day) Or if my air pressure is too low to meet my needs. Has anyone heard of low air pressure making someone sleep longer hours? I am sending my record card from my CPAP to the CRT to be examined. She said I should not be sleeping for 11 or 12 hours. IF my card shows something unusual, she will check out my CPAP to make sure its working right. If that is ok--then she will consult the Dr. I Feel STUPID--everyone else can't get enough sleep, and I am getting too much. Got any ideas, or has anyone heard of a CPAP making someone sleep too much? Berneta

    Hi Berneta

I guess you'll get the definitive answer from your medical team but sure, too low a pressure will permit apnoeas thus poor quality sleep thus you may spend longer in bed. Add a few coconuts falling on your head .......

Hi TF, I fully expect "my team" to tell me that everything is fine, and I am just sleeping longer than normal, and am a NUT myself. Don't trust the "Teams" here or there very much. Seems to me that they just want to hand out the CPAP stuff--and kinda say "you're on your own". So we will see about that. It will take at least a week for me to get my Record Card read. Then a week to hear from my DR. So I am glad to hear that if it isn't just the nuts waking me up --it could be that the machine needs to be upped a bit. I didn't wake up til half past noon on Sunday and my hubby was about to come check on me, to see if I died in my sleep. He is torn between waking me up--and letting me sleep! He fixes his own breakfast. The nuts are all down now--none fell last night, and I didn't get woke up--but still slept from 10 PM to 11AM with one get up and go at 5 AM. I am not tired at all--but kinda feel drugged or hung-over. I don't take any sleep aids and I don't drink alcohol or smoke. I use De-cafe coffee and Herbal Teas--but right now I think I need a huge cup of Hot Chocolate and Strong Coffee to get me going. Love and Coffee--what more could I ask for! Hope you are sleeping better yourself, Berneta x

Hi berneta, sounds like its not medical at all, if you sleep is getting disturbed and your waking during the night then just like OSA you are having disturbed sleep and your body will compensate for this with a longer lie in. If the nuts are bothering you that much then try ear plugs or an mp3 player and if the problem is resolved then theres your answer if not then I would start looking at other issues.

          Sleeping longer

Hi Everyone. My CPAP Memory Card was read, and it had an AHI of 0.5--and nothing else was other than what it should have been, So the CPAP is working very well for me. The Therapist suggested that the nuts falling might be arousing me just momentarily, and that could account for several short arousals that showed on the card. She said that I might also be sleeping longer to compensate for that--or maybe my body is just making up for all the lost sleep I have had for years. She said as long as I am not tired and sleeping all day, have no headaches, or Mental "Fog" on awaking then there is nothing to worry about. All my Diabetic Testing and Blood Pressure testing and all other Blood Tests are nearly normal. With the exception of my Tryglicerides that have come down from 256 to 116 (Miracle) since starting the CPAP Therapy. So I figure there is nothing to worry about-- just enjoyed a little longer sleep for a couple weeks. Next year I will use earplugs though, as I think it was mostly the falling nuts and so annoying. The nuts are all down now, and I am waking earlier again between 8 and 9 and feel fine all day. So it was not a big problem, and I should have posted it sooner. Thanks, Berneta
