  • Restless Leg Syndrome?

It Takes Me Almost An Hour to Go To Sleep @ Night. Like I Have To Find Exactley the Right Spot. No Matter What I Can't Stop Moving. I Keep Tossing And Turning. Moving my Legs. Everything. It Takes Forever. I Can Be So Tired & It Still Takes me Sum Where Between A Half An Hour To An Hour or Two To Go To Sleep. My Grandma Has Restless Leg Syndrome. Could It Maybe Be Genetic? What's Wrong With ME! =[
I Also Drink About 2-4 Mt. Dew's a Day. So I Get Caffine Loaded Everyday. I'm Addicted To Mt. Dew. Maybe That's It? lol

You already listed one bad habit you can eliminate yourself. Not only is it caffeine loaded, it's also a sugar bomb. With that much energy packed inside, you're bound to have trouble falling asleep. Swap the sugar drinks for water for a month and see if you still have trouble, then worry about restless leg syndrome.

I remember being told for my children... Prepare for bed, get yourself and the kids into the right mood, pyjamas, low lighting, avoid food or drinks of all sorts for the couple of hours before bed...

Of course since OSA came into my life, sleep is not a problem. I get tired at around 10pm, I make it to bed.. then I'm just gone... Of course depression can be a sleep killer too...

I was diagnosed with RLS at the same time as my OSA. Mine tends to kick in (excuse the pun) as I am waking. I have been told that an hour or so before I fully wake, I'll start jiggling.

I also suffer during the day and can be sat for long periods, blissfully unaware that I am doing it, before a colleague tells me to stop !!

Thankfully, mine isn't too extreme but does come and go in waves.

As has already been said, reduce things like caffeine and find some good relaxation techniques. I was taught one when I was suffering from asthma as a child. Starting from the head, tense up a group of muscles for about 20-30 seconds and then relax. I start with my face, then my shoulders and neck, chest, arms, stomach, hips, legs and finally toes. This should only take a few minutes and I feel quite relaxed afterwards.

That is exactly one of the instructions in a meditation MP3 I once downloaded from the web. Tense and let go... Works very well!

            Restless Limb Syndrome

I was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome some years ago and was given various drugs. However it became worse and I went back to the doctor to say I was getting the same sensations in my hands and arms aswell. I was referred to a neurologist and he confirmed that in rare cases the arms can also be affected. I am now on pramapexole which is an anti parkinsons tablet and it works 95% of the time.. I have just started on cpap therapy for sever osa and I am hoping to get a good nights sleep not to far in the future...

              Restless Legs

I too have RLS. I have suffered for nearly 15 years now and it doesn't get any better!I find no relief from anything, I can't have medication as it conflicts with my other medication, so I suffer, and believe me, it is not in silence! I moan and groan, I walk the floors through the night, I kick, toss turn and move my legs all night. I even suffer through the day, and a car journey is a nightmare. I also have it in my arms but have always put that down to an old Tennis elbow in both arms. I hate it. I have relaxation cd's, don't drink coffee, and drink water by the bucket full! So if anyone has a remedy for me( apart from chopping my legs off) I would be very appretiative! Michelle

A lot of people turn to Chinese Medicine for Restless Legs Syndrome, many with good success.

Anything that improves circulation, such as Chi/Shiatsu Massagers, lymph drainage etc. could benefit your sleep.

                  RL

I'd not had problems with restless legs for some time, then I came off some of the anti-depressants I was on - Duloxetine had completely removed the RL - so I'm back to jiggling again.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and then restless legs. I stopped taking the RL medication because I didn't like the out of control feeling I had with this. I am interested to know what sort of affects you get from pramapexole, I am in the country fire authority and on call 24 x 7 for turn outs. This is really difficult if medication knocks you out stupidly, that is why I want to know how it works. Cheers Sandy

                      Aspartame ???

I too have RLS and have had it for a few years, I think it started when I was first prescribed Prozac or fluoxetine. all my doctor could do was give me another script that didn’t work, little blue pills anti psychotics I think!

I was watching a documentary the other day about medical conspiracies (new world order stuff) and they mentioned that the additive in artificial sweetener ASPARTAME can cause all sorts of problems, im not really a conspiracy nut (or am i? lol) but I was drinking a whole lot of diet coke, 4-5 cans a day, sweetener in my coffee and lucosade sport when at the gym when my legs troubles went through the roof, not just restless but bouncing my legs constantly and grinding my teeth quite bad, when I stopped drinking them, the symptoms went back to just restless at night etc. my Dr did also say that Prozac and fluoride is thought to cause it!

Check your intake of aspartame and see if it helps, its found in a lot of products. I still have RLS and would love to get rid of it, ill be back here to see if anything else helps!

                      Cheers

                      Steve

                        restless legs

My wife has had problems with jumping legs since a child and it drives her scatty. She suffers from it at any time especially at night before she goes to sleep and it continues on whilst she's asleep. I can vouch for this by the bruises Has anyone had any luck since the last post in 2009. The doctor treats it with slight amusement.

                          Restless Legs

Hi Andy, I waited along time to see if anyone could come up with an answer that would help your wife. I too agree that Artifical Sweetners are not good for anyone, I don't touch anything that has an artificial sweetner in it--and that does mean a lot of reading of ingredients. My Grandmother was a Midwife and Holistic Practicioner for 40 years. She always said don't put anything into your body that doesn't naturally belong there. She said that Restless legs and leg cramping was caused by a lack of calcium, vitamin c, and vitamin d. If your wife hasn't solved the problems-- then she might want to try the no artifical sweetener and more minerals and vitamins to see if that helps. By the way--there is very little vitamin c in pills because they are heat processed-- and heat will destroy vitamin c. She should get most of what she needs from real food that has calcium and real sunlight. No Sun--then try the vitamin D tablets. Take them according to directions. I suggest fresh fruit, rose hips, broccoli, dandelion, fresh spinach or mustard greens, and dairy products if she is not allergic to them. Visit a Health Food store and ask about what natural foods or herbs might be good for her problem. It might be worth the time and effort and help solve her problem-- and I hope she will feel better soon. Berneta

I went to bed at 11 pm cos I was falling asleep at the computer but was woken yet again by RLS! Ive gone from sleeping really good to having a torrid time again. I can only manage a few hours sleep before I have to get up. I think its time I rang the clinic up because all this is driving me daft
