  • pain and very dry mouth from new mask

I am not sure how. But when i first used a CPAP machine i was given two REMstar gel full face masks, one because i felt claustrophobic so i was given a larger mask, i had no problems with pain or dry mouth.

Now i have my own machine the pressure was too much for the larger gel mask, so i was given to try a Resmed full face mask that fits so well, but in the morning i am so dry in the mouth, and my nose feels like its about to burst some mornings and it can feel painful.
I do have a drink at the side of my bed in the morning, i do gulp down a full sport type bottle quite fast. Does this mean the mask is not ok for me even thou i don't get no leaks and i sleep well, or do i just keep using it and maybe i get use to it. Just wondering if other people have had this problem when trying diffrent masks, and do you think its worth me telling the clinic now or when i next see them in Octorber. Just a bit confused on why its happen now when i have been useing full faced masks and no other kind of mask.

Do you have a humidifier? I was only supplied one when I complained of a dry mouth, which seems to be a problem when you mouth-breath. All masks have a built-in leak - they have to let you breath out and vent the CO2 - this leads to the pressurised air swirling inside the mask and drying out your mouth at the same time.

Yeah, sounds like you will be one of the many who benefit from a heated humidifier. Which machien do you have?

Very dry mouth - sounds like mouth breathing. I am having that and my machine has a heated humidifier.

          Hi sheffgal

i guess it is possible that you may get some leakage during the night - excessive can however wake the individual up. CPAP units generally have the ability to compensate for leak by blowing with more flow, which tends to exacerbate any mouth dryness. On some machines it is possible to check how much leakage you are having, otherwise your sleep centre should be able to check for you as long as you have a fairly modern CPAP machine. So if you dont think you have excess leak, you may just need to have a humidifier added to your machine.
          Good luck
