  • Am I a bozo? (Polite replies only, please!)

I started using CPAP for the first time last week, with an Ultra Mirage II Nasal mask.

When the nurse demo-ed it to me at the hospital, and for the first night, I felt I could really feel the air coming through quite strongly - sort of like a breezy summer day.

Since then, the pressure seems to be much less. There's definitely still *some* pressure, since I can't open my mouth easily. But I feel actually have to consciously breath through my nose to get any air flow - the air doesn't just come to me like I remember on the first night.

Also, here is a steady, quite strong, draught coming out of the back of the mask itself - I think from the vent cover on the mask elbow. This does seem to be properly clicked on, however.

I'm not finding that the mask is giving me especially restful sleep. But I still seem to wake up as tired as I did before. (The nurse implied that I should be noticing initial benefits from the mask in about 4 days.)

I have Read The Fantastic Manual (RTFM) that came with the mask, but there doesn't seem to be anything directly relevant to this issue. Does it sound as if there a problem with the mask, or (much more likely!) am I being a bozo and doing something wrong?

    Theories:
    * Something gone wrong with the mask after the first night?
    * Not a proper seal around the mask?
    * Contrarywise, mask on too tight?
    * Me just getting used to CPAP in record time, and not realising that the air flow is just as strong as it was the first night, but that I've just got used to it?

Hi there -what machine are you using - if it's an auto then you'll get used to it quite quickly.

Best port of call at this stage is your clinic!

Not sure whats a Bozo but I doubt it. Id give it a few days then phone the clinic and ask for their advice.

      Welcome to the forum

Ooh I remember those early nights...

As the others have said, if you have a problem, don't try and put up with it, ring your clinic.

        Best of luck.

Thanks to all for your help. I went back to the clinic as suggested.

As symmit suggested, they were happy that my "lack of pressure" was actually me getting used to the mask nice & quickly. So no worries there

They did diagnose that I was possibly strapping the mask on too tightly, and it
seems to be much more comfortable now I'm not pulling at the straps in like the stays on Marie Antoinette's corset...
