hello sorry you are prob bored with this question... but i was given a resmed autoset machine yesterday from my sleep clinic which is 50 miles away from me. i have a mirage micro mask, which goes rund my forhead and over my nose...i was told to use it at home for a couple of hours in the afternoon before using it at night so i could get used to it.
I did but i was in my armchair so sat upright.. i was ok with it on and even managed a short nap. but come bedtime... i had four attempts to use it and had panic attacks and had to take it off.. i could only manage about a minute each time... i was ok wile sitting up but lying down wasnt confortable at all... i have soft pillows and have seen on here a sleepap pillow... do you think that would be a good option to try that before mentioning my problem to the sleep clinic. Also i have trouble sleeping on my back as i am a larger lady. i tend to sleep on my side or on my front which i could not do with the mask on, so i felt rather quastraphophic with the mask on... i think that was because i was worried my mouth would open, which it is most of the time im asleep.. do you have any suggestions?

Sounds like you're a mouth-breather that's been given a nasal mask - not a lot of good, really.

Contact your sleep-clinic and ask for a full-face mask which will improve the situation a great deal.

thankyou.. i will ring them... its just a pain as i live in MK and they are in Hammersmith so its a 3 hours journey by tubesm trains and buses.

ive been looking at the sleepap pillows but they are very expensive and there is no way i can afford one... would a memoy foam pillow help at all as i can get one of these for £4.99?

i think the idea of the full mask sounds a lot better, as when i have had hospital stays i have slept with a full mask... but this nose only one is horrible.. i so want to open my mouth... and i know the second i do fall asleep my mouth will open.. so cos i am worrying about that im not gonna get to sleep.. round in circles i go lol

Why go all the way to London for an appointment? Try here:

You should be able to get the proper treatment much closer to home; ask your GP for a referral.

thankyou Richard... but i was refered to the charing cross hospital by there biaratric department as i am due to have a gastric bypass within the next 10 weeks, im just waiting my date as ive signed my consent forms... when they said about going to the sleep clinic.. i contacted my doctor in milton keynes... Charing cross hospital got me an appointment within 3 days, then at that appointment i was given a sleep study overnight appointent within a week.. which i had on thursday. Milton Keynes have yet to write to me to give me an appointment..so friday i called them and they said my appointment will take about 3 months... so therefore i am happy to travel the journey to Hammersmith. i dont think MK will sort me out a new mask as both hospital have different funding x

Meanwhile you might try asking if your clinic will send you a mask by post, having been a patient of two clinics both of them sent filters & parts and even masks to me by post next day.

I am a side sleeper as well and needed a couple of pillows but I bought a pillow from Ikea that has a groove through the middle I find it very comfortable you have to sleep near the edge for the mask to fit in the groove but I no longer have neck aches from pulling my normal pillows around they were only about £4.99 as well.
