  • Mask free!

I was only diagnosed with moderate-severe apnea a couple of years ago (I stopped breathing 30 times per hour) although I probably suffered most of my life, my husband even joked about my stopping breathing on our honeymoon! So, I got my mask, found I couldn't keep it on while sleeping in bed.....so, bought an expensive recliner... went through various masks ending with a full face one. Then last year, after a really bad chest infection and not being able to wear my mask, I realised that if I slept on my recliner more or less sitting up, I didn't stop breathing or snore loudly or get up to the bathroom at all (let alone up to 4 times per night!) So now I just sit up in my recliner every night and leave my mask in it's case! My husband says that as far as he is concerned I don't stop breathing anymore and hardly snore now

Go on then, which recliner are you selling

That's great to hear, though I would personally want that confirmed independently ie have a sleep study while in the recliner. I'd also be slightly worried about the long term effects of sleeping like that, in terms of spinal shape, back aches etc.

But if you are really apnoea-free then well done!

Hi James, thank you for your reply. Strangely enough, since writing on the Forum, my husband now says that maybe I should wear my mask again as my breathing is very shallow and slow at the moment!! The thing is, I am having other health issues at the moment to do with my lungs and shortness of breath and have a few hospital tests in the pipeline. In the meantime, the only mask I have at the moment is the full face one, although I have tried quite a few, but I find them all so uncomfortable and they make my face sweat! I read about the Sleepweaver and asked the Sleep Nurse at the hospital if I could get one of those. She said that they don't have them at the moment due to the cost and the short length of time each mask lasts! But she is going to enquire for me. As for my recliner......it's the only place I sleep really comfortably now! We went away for a week recently and I tried to sleep in a bed, each morning I woke up with a really bad backache! As soon as I was back in the recliner, the backache was gone. I'm just waiting now to see what the Sleep Nurse comes up with, she knows my predicament, I'll keep you updated
