  • Nasal mask and cold / flu / stuffy nose

So far, so good. However I "traditionally" get a stonking headcold around Christmas, probably due to meeting all the family and their kids...

So should I order a fullface mask from Intus tomorrow, or am I being too paranoid?!?

James - you can comment but your vote won't count... you're only thinking of your bonus!

Yes, 120 quid well spent when you're unable to sleep. You'd only spend it on Wine and Whiskey.

Don't be daft, you'll never need it, you've got a sleepweaver. That's 4 bottles of Pol Roger!

I have a chest infection which hurts when I breathe hard (and is recurrent due to a bout of pluresy a few y ears back i have scar tissue around the lungs and gets inflamed when I gewt a chest infection) and the cpap makes me breathe!!! but i am still managing to sleep with it, so my vote would be to stick with what you have and just cope as best you can...

Since I discovered Otravine a blocked nose at night because of a cold has never been a problem. I am careful ONLY to use it when I get a cold though, and only to use it to keep my nose unblocked overnight. There are many reports available of where people overuse it and damage the nasal tissues, and with CPAP that is the last thing you need!.

I have to add though, that since I have started using a Sinupulse machine a couple of times a week, I have had a lot les problems anyway!

If you use it every other day at least, I bet you get between zero and no problems at all!

              Haha!

You forgot option 3 - the SinuPulse I'd go for that instead of an extra full face mask for that once a year occasion. The SinuPulse may even help prevent it from happening in the first place.

And do note I don't get a bonus for recommending stuff here! Just want all of you to sleep well (and make sure I can go on holiday once a year to escape the onslaught here in the forums )

                Sinupulse

I diverted £100 of my whisky fund into a Sinupulse and haven't regretted it.

im a big sufferer of nasal problems (10+ years as a paint sprayer / powder coater left alot of problems... ) and am continualy feeling blocked up to some degree... some days alot worse than others...
But im loathe to drop 100 quid on a sinupulse only to find it doesent help :0(

Exactly how clear does it leave you? if i use Otravine im left feeling like i have a hole in the middle of my face you could drive a train through!! its great!... but as others have said its very limited in how often you can use it..
Does the Sinupulse work as well as otravine? but without the long term damage?

                  Where can i test 1,,,

I happen to have some Otravine and used it last night as I have a cold. I also have a SinuPulse! Note I don't use CPAP but perhaps this (wholly unbiased, of course) experience can shed some light.

To begin with, indeed Otravine is a drug/medicine so not only do you put non-natural elements into your system, you can indeed get addicted to it too. Otravine doesn't clear anything up/cleanse anything out, it causes the blood vessels to shrink so you increase nasal passage volume that way. (This is my understanding, not a doctor/pharmacist). I personally wake up with an extremely crusty nose (nose-picking urges) after using Otravine.

The SinuPulse with SinuAir salts that come with it contain nothing that nature doesn't make itself. No withdrawal symptoms, no side effects you need to worry about. It removes gunk, hels heal inflammation and then boosts the body's own nasal protection mechanisms by stimulating cillary flow with its pulsating operation. It also moisturises.

With this cold, I first use the sinus irrigator to remove as much catarrh as possible, then just before bed, as I happened to have some left from a little diving accident a few years back, I do one sniff of Otravine each nostril as it helps keep the nasal airway free at the peak of the cold. Without the SinuPulse first, I couldn't even have gotten Otravine up both nostrils.

In fact, may ENTs recommend saline nasal irrigation to those who inhale medication. By cleansing first, the medication is often more effective.

If I only had one instead of both last night, I would have preferred the SinuPulse myself as the crusty dry nose isn't my favourite sensation. And the SinuPulse would have offered me preventative options, something the Otravine doesn't I don't think.

So they do things slightly differently really. The SinuPulse really helps move the gunk and heal inflammation, keeping the nose healthy. Otravine tricks the blood vessels into contracting, offering temporary increased nasal air flow. It's far from the same.

But don't take my word for it, see the SinuPulse Reviews on Amazon and our site.

The SinuPulse is a great companion to CPAP and anyone with regular sinus issues. Otravine is great for the odd accute occasion, and for diving related incidences like I had (surfacing with the goggles filled with blood).

                        CPAP cures sinus??

Just had a real mother and father of a dose of the REAL flu; ill for weeks with a horrid chest infection and the worst cough for ages. Had to give up the rubber fetish for a bit because of the cough but back on it now and it has helped to chase off the last effects.
Just done nearly a year with my Quattro now. Can't say it's cured all my sleep problems but it certainly seems to have cleared my sinuses, all my problems with mucus build up and I never wake up choking having stopped breathing.
I did think it might blow back all the nasty stuff into my lungs but it doesn't seem to work like that. I guess it must be that I now breath deeply and exhale properly instead of very shallow breathing that allows stuff to build up.
Ready for my yearly service end of the month. Can't say it's been a flawless experience but I'm used to "Lamia" now and nothing she does really fazes me. She does put me into a really deep sleep and I've had some quite interesting dreams too - anybody else noticed that?

It's all an immune system thing isn't it. Untreated OSA leaves you weak and prone to all sorts of infections, whether it's sinus or other. So go on CPAP, get OSA under control, boosts your immune system as there's less stress on the system and more quality sleep time for bolidy healing, and you will find far fewer health issues, including sinus problems. So yes, perhaps you can say, CPAP helps avoid sinus issues. Provided you have a humidifier and no flu!

                            CPAP cured my sinus problems

I've got the hospital supplied gear - Resmed and Mirage Quattro - no humidifier. Had a bad bout of flu and horrid cough where I had to lay off for a bit but have to say CPAP seems to keep my sinuses clear and prevents mucus building up in my throat too. Have to say I'm surprised - thought it would blow it all into my lungs - but I guess I'm not shallow breathing now and I've never woken up choking, having stopped, at all since starting Feb last year. Certainly I get a good lungful with each breath now. Just coming up to my first year service.
