Problems with taste

Sorry to keep asking questions!

Have had two nights of therapy so far and I find my sense of taste has been affected. I don't seem to have a full range of taste, food doesn't taste right and some things taste terrible.

I Googled this problem, but it doesn't seem to be very common. Has anyone else experienced this?

By the way, I am a mouth breather.

Indeed not common, can't remember anybody else mentioning it before.

Some speculation:

Are you getting enough humidification? Can you crank up the humidifier?

OSA wrecks your immune system. Perhaps with CPAP is gets restored and your body is in overdrive detoxing. With the tongue/mouth being techically part of your skin, and skin being a toxin elimination channel, perhaps this "throwing out the garbage" is affecting your taste. A white coating on your tongue would confirm that.

But that's wild speculation!

I'd fully expect any such anomalies to settle within a fortnight.

You can of course try a chin strap to try and nose breathe instead, to see if it makes a difference for your tatsebuds.

My guess would be that it is nose related - most of our "tasting" is actually done by the nose. Having air blasted up your nose all night (especially if it is dry) is likely to irritate it at least a little bit at first.

If it keeps giving you a problem after a couple of weeks, you may be another candidate for the miracle of Sinupulse

Yes, I have a lovely white coating on my tongue :-/

And I do have a SinuPulse. Just getting used to it - seems a lot of things to contend with all at once!

Sense of Smell

I experienced "odd" smells during the first month of using my CPAP--and expect it was the change in the OSA. I smelled everything from cigars to roses. My taste was off too--anything mild tasting often could taste odd, while strong flavors were ok. As its been said--we get taste through our sense of smell, not through the tongue. You'll probably get over that pretty fast. xx Berneta
