  • Ramping!

    A Query!

With most machines you have a choice to adjust your ramp from about 30 mins to zero and the other day I have taken my ramp off because as the months go on the preasure seems to get weaker. When I turn on my machine is there still a delay as it still stays on 4 for sometime? I thought it would start on blast at the off but it still feels like a trickle. Do you think the machine could be faulty?

Which machine do you have exactly?

An Auto-CPAP's ram pfeature is quite different from a CPAP's ramp feature.

In an Auto, with ramp on, it will keep the pressure fixed at the ramp pressure for the set period of time.

In an Auto, with ramp off, will still start the machine at the Auto lower pressure and it will stay low until it sees a need to rise.

So whether on or off, it may make little difference in practice.

If you find the lower pressure too low, have it increased.

Aha thank you very much for that now for the next question. As I have now found the hidden menu with loads of readings for the S8 can you tell me what AI & HI stand for? I get the AHI but AI and HI not sure?

AI is the apnea index (number of times your airway closes completely in an hour. HI is the hypopnea index ( number of times it partially closes in an hour)
            AHI is combination of both.

As a newbie here I think that's right but I'm sure I will be corrected if I've got it wrong.

Yes, that sounds about right. The machines can indeed differentiate between hypopnoeas and apnoeas so it seems logical they can keep count separately too. Some even keep a snore index and something called "flow limitation".
