I use an apex 111 for travel but notice that its a lot noisier at the mask end than my main machine. Any suggestions as to baffles or anything else to stem the whoosh.....its not a killer but twould be nice. I assume we have all had this problem but memo to self, ALWAYS BRING A PLUG EXTENSION !!!!

To repeat a note on another thread , i spotted a sleep apnoea machine on an american comedy show michael and molly ... is there a prize or should we start a sort of bird watching competition were we cross off different models as we spot them.

Never thought of that, i assumed i should use the same pressure as my day to day machine, in fairness to my medical connection i never asked. Sound of me slapping forehead, too much wind noise implies too much wind..sigh. Oh well, i never claimed to be smart. Now i will spend some time this weekend pretending to be on holiday so i can play with the settings. Ta muchly !!

In District 9, when Wickes van de Merwe goes under the knife to have his alien arm removed, he wears a Hans Rudolph CPAP/NIV mask. Does that count? Or are we talking machines only.

The Apex XTIII is in fact quieter in terms of blower noise than most machines. If you get extra sound at the mask end, it may be the tubing. Did you try putting your day to day machine's tubing on the XT machine?

If the pressure is the same, then my bet is on the tubing causing the difference.

Re noise at the mask end, I took to the habit of placing my CPAP machine on a mat of bubble wrap inside an ice cream tub with a window cut in the end for air circulation lead and hose. Pointed away from the bed it cuts noise from the machine down but if not my imagination it also seemed there was less noise at the mask end.

Ta for the thought James, my everyday machine has the extra bit for heating so cant switch them over. Didnt get around to pottering with the settings yet, cant have too much fun in a weekend so i'll save that for a really bad tv night! Will have a look on your site to see what other tubes are available. Maybe if i get one with dinosaurs on it, at least if i cant sleep it would be nice to look at. (My first thought was something other than dinosaurs but my wife suggested it was totally innapropriate given wind and tubes being involved and this being a well read and polite community)

Bubble Wrap

Sounds like a brilliant Idea for cutting down sound--but have you tested to make sure the machine doesn't get warm enough to melt it? My instructions say not to place my machine on cloth, plastic, carpet, cardboard or anything that might be easily combustible. (Could be just a precaution for the benefit of the company.) The bottom of my machine and humidifier does get quite warm when the humidifer is set at 4. But I don't think it would burn anything, as I can hold my hand on the heating plate when its on. If you haven't checked on temps--please do so. My machine can't be put in a box--the air intake must have a 12 inch clearance space also. So-- what we need is a piece of foam off the Space Shuttle to make a suitable box from! Hey James--want to call NASA? LOL xx Berneta

You are quite right as having checked my CPAP machine is still very warm indeed and I wasn't even using my humidifier last night. Guess I am going back to being noisy and my ice cream carton and bubble wrap is going in the bin!

Hmmm..tried lowering the pressure but still whooshy....Had just bought bubble wrap and eaten all the ice cream (burp) and now you tell me that doesnt work, Berneta!! (Ok maybe it was just an excuse to eat ice cream and pooh bear flavour just happened to be the nearest container..yums).

I've noticed that Gail has hard plastic ends while baby gail has soft rubber ones....sigh the sights you see when bored. Think i'll get me some plastic and whittle me some fixings, new hobby trying to make wind baffles, all i need is a rocking chair, a dog to sit under it, a verandah and better weather than we get in Ireland!

Have you tried using a cosy wrap around the hose to see if this dampens the sound as well as reducing condensation?

The solution is quite simple and with the knowledge on here I cant quite believe that no one has said it, put the machine in the spare room and buy a longer hose

Yep, nice grey one, also has the advantage that i dont get lots of lines down my arm...Its odd, i can sleep with the radio on but the whoosh gets me, just glad it doesnt affect my main gal.

Thanks for the thought sparty but the noise is at the mask end, what i would need to do is get a longer nose so the mask is further from my ears...though we would need to work on bone conduction, tricky.

I solved this problem a year ago, after the noise was desturbing my sleep due to the frequency of the air hissing. let me explain certain noises come in different levels ie frequency, now my fan whirls round and makes a noise that doesnt bother me same with the tv or the radio, doesnt matter how loud I can still sleep all day long, now if my daughter is off school and she starts talking it will disturb my sleep, same with cats meeowing dogs barking, traffic, doesnt have to be loud, if I hear it I cant sleep. One day I stuck my ear plugs in and played some elivator music, I was out cold sinse then I have my head phones on when I sleep, works for me. Think I will play some learn to speak spanish in your sleep tapes next
