  • Wearable CPAP - Another Stab

There used to be a shoulder-worn version of the BreatheX. Now we have a CPAP you wear like a helmet. Behold:

What do you make of that?

    Fine! - but ....

Beds almost don't come long enough to accomodate me as I am- but with one of those strapped to my head, no chance!

I'll give them a miss - can't afford to build the extra inches onto my bed, mattress and move the bedroom wall back by the same amount.

If they had designed it to go on the back of one's head, it would have doubled as a supine sleeping discourager as well! (as saving folk like me a small fortune).

Now there's a thought, 2-in-1, you could be on to something there TF!

Or wear it around the ankles to stop PLMS. If the straps allowed multiple styles/positions, it could be really versatile.

I'd go for that, thats quite a cool idea but there is so much scope for more, what about a bumbag that it could slip into and go round your waiste, really like the new ideas, thought it was stupid at first but now, seems a little genious to me.

          Bumbag?

Must me the Nicotine withdrawl making him a little crazy. Now maybe if a CPAP was reduced to micro size--we could just shove it up our nose, Geesh! The worlds gone crazy! Can just picture TF sleeping diagonally with a CPAP on his head, (Giggle) Sorry-xxBerneta

            Interested

presumably you can leave it on when you go to the loo and will probably solve the rain-out problem.

As TF suggests, this kit share a problem with Respironics Comfortlite in that anyone over around 5 feet 10 inches could not wear it in a standard bed.

Is transport a problem with standard kit? A hosehead pal travels worldwide with a set of mains adaptors and a battery pack, he even has an adaptor for a caravan/car he told me (unless he is pulling my leg).

The one thing that is interesting is the suggestion that warm moist air is used without a humidifier. I no longer use one myself but I would be interested to learn about the science behind this, especially as it may prove useful.

Heat / moisture exchanges are used in breathing circuits in hospitals already - I expect they're working on that basis.

                  Thanks Symmit.

I haven't seen this claim asserted with any other CPAP masks, I wonder why the other manufacturers aren't exploting it?

Now if they really thought about it and made one that you wore like a backpack, it would force yo to sleep on your side, where teh Apnoea problem is less severe! two birds with one stone

TF beat you to that idea Fredxx though your back-pack idea is a slight variation on that priniple. Of course, the nice benefit of head-worn, helmet-style CPAP is the short circuit required to the face. A back-pack, bum-worn pants-style or ankle-worn contraption would still need a connection to the airways.

A while back I wished for what Berneta describes. Some nano-technology so an air pump cna be built into the mask. Or make it even smaller, straight into the nostrils/windpipe indeed.

Why not just cut the lungs out and implant a miniture version of the blood oxygenator used whilst you are under GA. A little hole in your throat and bingo - no more OSA.

Then all you have to carry in the helmet, bum bag or whatever is a battery. Oh! and wires to the machine instead of a hose.

                          Back to the drawing board!

The more I read about it, the better this Transcend "helmet-CPAP" looks. At least for out-and-about situations, tents, caravan, boat etc. I can see why one would go for this instead of lugging their own machine with them. Will be interesting to see the first reviews after the first few users have had a few weeks use.
