What are the rules involving NHS equipment. Am I allowed to retreive my data set from there machine? It seems that this is a very large grey area. It's my data that sits in their machine, any help on this would be greatly received

The simple fact about the NHS is that, under the Data Protection Act, you are entitled to see any information they hold about you. As the data on the machine is information about your treatment, they would be in breach of the Data Protection Act if they didn't let you see it.

I'm not sure all doctors and clinicians see it that way, but that is the law.

      Hi Sparticus

You are allowed to do anything you want - ever since you were 18 or 21 years old, according to your age - until a Judge in a Court of Law sends you to prison and the Warders restrain you from doing it anymore.

Self-discipline is a great thing and keeps most of us out of a Court.

Perhaps more relevant: How would the NHS know you had retrieved your data unless you told them? Who is this greater NHS that you think cares what you do about your data?

What will you do with your conscience when it comes to changing settings on your NHS machine that affects your sleep quality by blowing air into your lungs?

        Settings

I have been through every inch of my machine, Cough cough sorry property of NHS and as I have said I use APAP and dont need to change my setting as its working spot on. All I want to see in my AHI, my hours on the machine and what preaure I went to that night, 2 of those I now can read on my LCD thanks to resmed the other must be a state secret but lets go a little further.

Lets just say that Im planning a long drive. I wake in the morning as usual feeling groggy have breakfast and off I go on a 7-8 hour drive to my parents. Now what if, unknown to me my AHI readings have gone threw the roof and unknown to me Im going to fall asleep shortly. How are we suppose to check these things. If I knew that my AHI started to creep up then I would know something was not quite right and could do something to compensate this. At the moment we are swimming blind and unless we are feeling tired how the hell are we suppose to know whats going off with our bodies, I think its a valid point dont you!

I might just be cynical in my old age but is it a case that someone would have to be paid , by some means , to provide this information you require.

Why should I pay for something that already belongs to me?

              Data info.

My Resmed s8 has a data card, on my last visit to see the consultant I downloaded the info onto the data card for it to be read, I also have the APAP serviced whilst in the hospital and made sure the data would not be lost.
I presented the data card for them to interprit, he said "I don't need that, we can't read them". I had to fill out an Epworth sleep test form, had a chat with him and he said "I was fully compliant", and that he was going to discharge me from his clinic, If I had any problems to phone his secretery and she would arrange an appointment asap.
I don't think the AHI can be used on a daily basis?, it appears to determine the severity of your OSA which clinicians use to advise you on various matters, as to whether your OSA could be aleviated by change of diet, medication, weight loss and if you should or shouldn't drive?.
I personnally know when I have or haven't had a good nights sleep, as for driving, it is all our responsibility to be safe, and I am not sure if a load of data could achieve this?, be sure if there is an accident that warrants investigation, I'm sure the relevant authorities would find a way to read the stored data.
              Best wishes.
              Alex.

                Data card

Can you read the data card or is it a type that a normal card reader cant read? I wrote to resmed and they will not supply any of these items as they only supply hospitals?

                  data card.

I have never tried to read it, seems that even the health professionals don't want this information, the compliance seems to be calculated on the hours use meter. I have got the card out, it is trade marked Res Scan data card, rectangle in shape about half the height of a credit card but the same width, there is the same smartchip connectors like a credit card and it locates in the back of my Resmed S8. The instructions refer to copying data to the card or back to the S8, this, I think is for ease of changing machines, however there is a section to return the card to Resmed by post or in person, why? I know not. So unless it can be put into a credit card type of reader to be read, I can't help you further.
                  Best of luck.
                  Alex.
p.s. ResScan data cable/software is available on the net.

                    Update.

Looking at it further the connectors on the ResScan card are similar to that of a simcard, I have a usb lead that takes data from simcards to store your phone numbers on a computer, there is ResScan 3.11 software available to download, so there might be what you're looking for?, Just a thought.
                    Best of luck.
                    Alex.

                          Clarification on my part.

I own my Resmed APAP, I purchased it direct from the supplier although the NHS do carry out yearly servicing and testing, I had to get a prescription from my consultant before Resmed would supply it. Indeed this is my second machine that I bought, the reason for buying was because at the time of being diagnosed with OSA there was a long wait for an NHS machine and I was concerned about driving.
                          Best Wishes.
                          Alex.

The fact you are here on these forums, even talking about reading your data puts you in a camp which has a chance of knowing more about the machine than some of the staff at the smaller clinics. So if you were to carefully go about anything related to the machine, they may never know. I've not seen any machines logging when the data was last read.

But of course, as we always say, involve your clinic in whatever you (want to) do. It's better that they do know.

                              Tell Tale

I will be definatley telling them my intentions to read the data. If according to the clinics that I dont need an appointment for a year then who's looking after me, well I am and I want to know what is happening to me when I sleep. Theres too many questions to answer to leave it unchecked for a year. What if Im getting mask leaks that I dont know about? What if Im getting up in the night for a walk without knowing. My reading after 12 noon say I slept for 51 minutes, when it actually was 5 hours and 10 mins. What have I been doing? Answers on a post card to..........
