  • Ear and throat infections

After a couple of years with my NHS supplied CPAP machine I have started to get a lot of problems with ear and throat infections I dont know if this is common or not? I am pretty certain this is something to do with CPAP.

Most of the time I feel as though I have bad hay fever, I have tried leaving the humidifier off and that seems to help for a day or so but I then start getting very dry nose and its very uncomfortable.

I am wondering if I should look for a new machine? possibly an APAP model so that it can adjust the pressure so that its never higher than it needs to be.

    Any thoughts or advice?

I have found the opposite to be true. Since I starting using cpap I have not had a cold or sore throat at all, neither have I had any nasal problems and I have even stopped suffering from asthma. I thought that because the air I am breathing is filtered it has stopped all these things.
Perhaps I am just lucky but I wouldn't have thought that cpap could cause those problems unless you didn't clean your machine properly.
    Hope you get sorted out

Important you keep the filter clean at all times.
It may be you have a reaction to dust or mites.
Keep the machine off the floor and keep the mask and tubes clean, be careful with small vents that may culture a fungus that is not easy to see.

The floor as advised by a lot of clinics is not the best place for the machine as there is a lot of dust around. There is a lot of air passes through the machine so any dust etc. will be attracted to it. The filter will take care of a lot of it but not all. It will not stop air born viruses of course as they are very small and it is limited what you can do against them.

Worth a try raising the machine (if it is on the floor) and keeping the area around it as clean as possible.

I have used my machine for 18yrs without any problems, but I know a couple of people that did, they followed the advice above and have found it of benefit.

It may be something other of course but it is worth a try.

Read this, it'll probably sort you out:

If it's not about the actual CPAP machine or mask, it goes here. Discuss humidifiers, battery packs, tube sleeves, software and all other accessories.
