  • Why Can't I buy?

I have wrote to different sights looking for the ResScan data cable for my Resmed S8 and it seems impossible as no one seems to sell them. Resmed themselves have said no as they only supply hospitals and clinics. if anyone knows of a site that sells them could they please post the address, thanks

interesting note on the cpap australia site:

        http://www.cpapaustralia.com.au/medi...ernet-sale.pdf

I do hope the UK doesn't go down the same route.

Spartacus - it's looking like the solution will be to sell on your resmed and get a new machine with interface and data! Unless you can find a used one in the states or something? Have you tried posting on any of the US forums?

My machine is not mine its from the NHS and this is why Im having problems with getting data. if you so much as mention readings they start moaning about its not your machine and you cant do that and Im afraid that if I keep pushing I will lose them and have to hand my equipment back. My next appointment is in April and I am going to request to see the doctor instead of the usual nurses and ask him directly if I can monitor my data ie mask leaks and take it from there. If the answer is still no then I will go for one of these oximeter thingys that people have mentioned which will allow me to montor my o2 levels, its a start but hopefully I will save and buy my own equipment and go it alone as I feel that I can monitor myself far better than my clinic who I will see once a year. thanks

            OK, your legal rights...

Under the Data Protection Act 1998 you have a legal right to see all medical and health data held about you by the NHS unless they can demonstrate that doing so would be deleterious to your mental health. The NHS has a statutory legal obligation to supply any data requested within a 21 day period following a written request for it. They can charge for it up to £10 for paper records, and up to £50 where they have to retrieve and interpret data.

            Your way forward:
If they won't show you the figures, mention the Data Protection Act 1998 and your rights above. tell them you don't really want to go through the formal channels which is just going to be an annoyance to them and you (don't mention the charge; knowing about that is their problem), and say that just showing you the figures will save you and them a lot of trouble.

If they threaten to take your equipment back because you are being awkward, point out that that would be grounds for criminal negligence as they have a duty of care to treat the life threatening condition, OSA.

I know it all sounds over the top (it is!) but knowing your rights is the best way to achieve what you need, and pointing out that you know your rights is often the best way to get things done. Once they find that showing you the figures doesn't give them any more problems, and that you understand and can discuss them intelligently they are more likely to help again in the future.

Just a word of caution on data protection...

You might not get what you ask for since it looks like you want access to the data from the machine on an ongoing basis. Going down the data protection route will likely end up with you getting a copy of the data they have. If they only see you once a year, and download your data once a year, it might be an interesting but pointless exercise.

I don't think they will be under any obligation to give you data they have not actually got and they only get your data once a year - even though the data is collected every day.

My machine (Philips Remstar) uses an SD Card. I asked the doc what software they used to read the data. He told me, but added I would be unable to buy a copy because it was medical use only.

                  Hi wombara

Patients are not treated/regarded as being stupid/irresponsible in many countries other than UK.

I got the software and reader from US - albeit before Respironics initiated their 'no export to UK' rule, but which is easily circumvented.

I have the software so this is not a problem
