  • Qualified personnel in sleep

Hello all, I am researching the number of labs in the UK. Other than having to wait for getting a sleep study done, is there a problem with the number of qualified sleep personnel in the labs there in the UK?

Any assistance finding this out would be grand.

    Cheers,

    Mike O'Daniel, RPSGT

            Qualified Sleep Personnel

            Hello, Mike,

The quality of Sleep Centre staff is always an issue on this forum, with harrowing stories of the treatment OSA patients have received.

There is an accepted standard laid down by the British Thoracic Society and the British Sleep Society.

Qualification is offered by the Association of Respiratory Technicians and Physiologists and, for nursing alone, the Association for Respiratory Nursing Specialists.

For a clinic to call itself a 'Sleep-Centre' implies it is staffed with personnel holding these qualificatons. Certainly, there are highly efficient sleep clinics throughout the UK, but my feeling is that a number of clinics are set up with a respiratory consultant in charge and the rest of the staff are non-specialist.

Like TF says, Google Sleep Apnoea Trust.org.uk for a list of sleep-centres, but also have a look at the Papworth site - Google Papworth Respiratory centre where there are several good videos.

            Richard
