  • What does this sleep study mean

    Hey all.

I had a sleep study approx a year ago due to uncontrollable high blood pressure. I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea but could not afford a machine. I just met a friend who no longer needs his machine as he lost a significant amount of weight. He gave it me.

I don't unerstand my sleep study info and my doctor doesn't really explain the specifics. Can some one help me understand it. My sleep study say's the following:

"The baseline portion of the study began at 23:39 company 114.0 minutes of recording time with 82 minutes of sleep during which the patient experienced 9 Central apneas, 14 obstructive apneas, 9 mixed apneas, 72 hypopneas and 38 RERAs producing an RDI of 104, AHI 76, AI 23, HI 53. These events produced recurrent oxygen desaturation, the nadir being 83%. Oxygen saturation baseline was 96%, mean 94%. No R sleep occurred during this portion of the study.

Beginning at approx 0 1:35, the patient underwent pressure therapy titration with initial CPAP 4. This was titrated to an optimum CPAP 10 which eliminated sleep disordered breathing and airway obstructions, including during R sleep. A total of 45.0 minutes of R sleep was scored. Oxygen saturation was maintained that greater than 90%. The patient had a total of 25 respiratory comprised of 21 hypopneas and 4 RFRAs producing an RDI of 5, AHI 4."

    It means .....

    Hi GGGB

It means that without CPAP your sleep was totally rubbish and that with CPAP set at a pressure of 10 cm water your sleep was acceptably good (AHI 4).

Beware using someione else's machine!! You don't tell us if you were diagnosed with OSA or something else and you don't tell us of any other medical conditions.

Do you have medical insurance and could get to a sleep clinic?

Ooh. I was diagnosed with Obstructive sleep apnea. I thought that was strange in that I am only slightly over weight.

The only medical issue I have besides OSA is high blood pressure. It was only when I just could not bring my blood pressure (210/149) down did I research the causes and found sleep apnea would definately cause it. No after approx three weeks, my BP is now a fairly consistant 154/97 with meds. HOWEVER, I CAN ONLY USE THE CPAP FOR APPROX 4/5 HOURS. SOMETIMES I TAKE IT OFF WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING UNTIL I WAKE UP.

having no insurance, I talked a sleep clinic into doing it free with the results as provided above.

Regarding my 'used' CPAP, I got medical rep to calibrate it so I hope it's all right. I do know, it was very difficult to exhale through my mouth. This has foprced me to breath through my nose.

Being overweight isn't the reason for having sleep apnoea, but it does increase the chances of having it. Skinny people can have it too.
As for breathing through your nose; the majority of people breathe through their nose when they are asleep, which is why most CPAP masks are nasal masks.
I would guess your acceptance of the machine will improve over time and you will stop taking it off in your sleep

          Not so bad

          Hi GGGB

The stuff you put in uppercase is just typical newbie CPAP problems - there are any number of threads talking about such experiences. You just have to persevere until you get use to CPAP - not helpful, but true.

So it sounds like you are doing just fine!

why strange? we're not all beached whale's u know. some of us are 'normal' people of 'normal' weight!

It really pisses me off when sleep apnoea is mentioned & some people automatically assume u are a tub of lard!!

Have to agree with ohcrob. (I generally agree with his cynical view of things) My BMI is 25.5 - classed just slightly as overweight 6' 1" and 13 stones 7 pounds - and I was a bit less than that when diagnosed....

                    Big Beauties

Gee Guys, not to get off the subject of "Beached Whales" and "Tubs of Lard"--but I would like to know how long an extension lead a lady should carry for Cpap use in Hotels? Just long enough to wrap tightly around Ohcrob's throat should we happen to see him somewhere--or long enough for a Big Beauty in Black Lace to use as a whip, should she be able to entice him into her hotel room some night? Its hard to decide what the perfect length of lead might be, If we ladies decide to travel--I am sure we all would like to know, Berneta

Thanks Bern u made my day, i was beggining to think i'd lost my touch around here and people were thinking i was a 'pussycat'. Besides the noob started it by assuming we are all fat (not that i have anything against fat people but i couldn't eat a whole one!).

Btw the chances of a female enticing me ANYWHERE are remote to say the least but feel free to choke me!!

                        Perfect

Hi Pussycat--I'd have to say you are indeed perfect just the way you are. I don't like people who don't say what they mean. But If I was you--I'd still watch out for BBWomen--they are probably bigger than you, and one just might drag you off to her cave. OOOO LA LA! The question was--How long does the lead need to be? LOL Berneta

                              Length of lead

Hi Pussycat, I don't travel much and have never been to Europe (You're safe from me for now). I've never been anywhere outside the states, or even on an airplane. Really don't have a clue how big hotel rooms over there are---our Motels, Inn's, and Bed and Breakfasts are usually very small here (more to my liking) and we do have some very Big Expensive Plush Hotels--usually there is a plug by the bed here. So while "Length isn't everything"-sometimes it really does mean a lot. Too small might not work, and I don't want to carry around a 60 footer should I decide to visit Capri, (Would love to visit there!) Would one need a special length or special plug for a trip overseas? Sorry to burst your bubble, but size does matter sometimes. LOL. And if it came to a choice between going somewhere without my CPAP , or taking my CPAP--I would stay home. Berneta
