  • Options to reduce nasal congestion

I don't sufferer from hayfever but at times right through the year my nose gets congested and breathing through it is harder.

In the past I have used Beconase quite successfully - however because it's steroid based, I'd rather not use it extensively.

More recently I've seen Rhynil and given it a go. This didn't have such a marked effect but I think still worked. Seemed plant based so maybe suitable for longer term use.

What have the rest of you found effective? Anything you'd recommend, or advise steering away from?

I use Olbas Oil. A couple of drops on a piece of gause or cotton wool (make sure it's not too big as to obstruct the flow of air) placed at the air intake end of the hose works for me.
    Kind regards, Tricia

      Olbas

Yes, I use Olbas regularly. Since getting my CPAP I've even put a few drops on some tissue near the air vent on nights when I've felt bunged up.

However Olbas is quite overpowering and I was looking for something that I could use on a longer term basis to stop myself getting congested in the first place (as opposed to dealing with it after it happens).

Any other ideas apart from Rhynil or Beconase?

Intus sell a solution. of course!

        Hi snoreslikeatrain

        Check out the SinuPulse Elite.

I was very doubtful that I needed one; then I was very doubtful one could help me; then I tried one. Magic! What a fantastic feeling - being able to suck in great lungsful of fresh air!

          Hi TF.

yes, I saw these a while back and was intruiged. As an interim measure, I bought some Sterimar (Sea water nasal spray). Unlike a neti pot that I tried unsuccessfully a while back, this seem workable and helped clear some catarrh.

However my issue is that the nasal tubes themselves seem constricted. Even without any catarrh, airflow through them is reduced (plus noticable sound when inhaling etc).

I believe some of it is down to the area I live in (Bristol) as I've noticed it improve markedly when away on a long weekend in the Lake District (cleaner air?). Thus I'm thinking I need to reduce my nose's reaction to this. Would sluicing the tubes be the best way to achieve this or are there better methods?

            I reckon

            Hi snoreslikeatrain

Your symptoms sound like mine, if I understand you correctly. In the city, partially blocked nostrils. In the country, easier breathing. Now, with SinuPulse, I have easy breathing in the city (and don't take it to the country).

If, however, you're saying your nostrils could use a re-bore, SinuPulse won't help.

I really was a doubting Thomas - pulsing salt water up my nose, indeed - but now, I'm converted, praise the lord!
