  • Annoyances...

    Hey guys,

I haven't been here for a while, other issues to work on unfortunately. I have a Resmed S6 CPAP machine and a Mirage Quattro full face mask. Just thought I would put some of my problems down and see if anyone has suggestions!

I had a rash from the mask that seems to have resolved itself. Just a red mark following the curve of the mask especially at the sides of my nose. Not sure if this a chemical reaction as I only use mild wash up to clean it and the hose. Wondered if it was constant air escaping rather than contact from the seal that was drying my skin.

This leads nicely to the fact that I am sure that the mask is leaking quite a lot. Even with the mask fairly tight it leaks at various points easily and while I'm near awake I can adjust it in my sleep. But in deep sleep? I am sure this must reduce the pressure employed by the meter to maintain my airway and I'm not getting such a strong benefit at the moment. I'm also driving again and noticed a tired feeling that lead me to return home.

Finally I sleep with my mouth open and I am really getting a very dry mouth and sore throat sometimes and am not sure whether the loose seal is causing this or the pump isn't operating at best settings.

So I'm at the point where I'm wondering if CPAP is doing all it can for me. I haven't had a return sleep appointment since I got the machine some five years ago although I returned the machine to have data on it recorded. The machine appears fine, its on every night almost and it never seems to have any problems. It did make some motor noise in Germany but the machine is tolerant of voltage issues as it is a highly portable model apparently.

I guess I should approach the team at the Churchill Hospital but... Does the RESMED S6 work with a moisturising unit? Should I try a different machine given it is at least five years old? Would an APAP machine help or should the CPAP work as well given leak problems. Can the mask issue be fixed, perhaps there is a better type now?

    thanks for reading this..

    Martin.

    Trial and error

    Hi mart9012

The size of your mask is very important.

It won't take you long to read some of the 'Mask' threads and discover the trial and error nature of finding the right mask to suit individual you.

The mask seems to be the pivotal item in CPAP therapy and there does not seem to be anything even approaching a fitting service. See what your sleep clinic will provide and then you have to buy your own - an expensive route.

Well that is very true. I have had a fair selection of Mirage masks and we finally got to a "medium" after some trial and error. I don't think the hospital keeps any other make unfortunately and as I am on Incapacity Benefit I can't see me privately buying anything.

It is a bit of an annoyance as otherwise the mask is the least maintenance one I have owned. It seems to not break too easily and is fairly comfy. I just hate waking up to a contorted looking face that needs 3 hours to lose the red marks (!) just because the mask has to be so tight to form a seal on my face.

These types of fleece strap-covers aren't too expensive and fairly straight-forward to DIY:

Find all the information you need to make the most of CPAP therapy and treat Sleep Apnea. Read tons of reviews on CPAP Machines, Masks & Supplies.

They take care of strap marks quickly and comfortably.
