    The benefits

Congratulations, puffin! Sounds as if you are reaping the benefits of your surgery and beginning a new life.

Your last sentence (There has yet to be created a one stop "diet" that will guarantee permanent weight control for life other then surgery.) is both true and resultant from extreme thinking, surely? Does anyone really believe that a one stop diet with lifetimes guarantees is in any way realistic or possible?

You seem to have abandoned the middle ground where all the slim folk and successful weight-loss dieters live. They have the ability to balance food intake against work output on a fairly level curve.

Middle ground is what I seek - between the extremes of eating what I like, when I like but being way over-weight and having to undergo surgery to achieve a healthy weight.

Maybe that is the one stop, guaranteed for life diet - live in the middle ground, watch my weight, watch my diet, watch my work level.

Which leaves one small problem - how do I get there?

      Hi Tigers
As you said "quote: Your last sentence (There has yet to be created a one stop "diet" that will guarantee permanent weight control for life other then surgery.) is both true and resultant from extreme thinking, surely? Does anyone really believe that a one stop diet with lifetimes guarantees is in any way realistic or possible?" This may be the result of extreme thinking, I've battled with extreme weight problems for 40 years! If it was easy to maintain the correct weight then everyone in an ideal world would be happy. However as we all know with the current media hype about the growing amount of obese people in this country, there is "no" happy medium.

If you look at how many sure fire weight loss programmes there are out there, then it is clear that one group of people see it as a gravy train to keep raking the cash in. While others keep falling for the patter and shelling out large amounts of cash. It is a multi million pound industry that would not like to see the ideal "one stop diet", they would soon be out of business.

As to "abandoned the middle ground where all the slim folk and successful weight-loss dieters live" It's the one place I've never been to in my life, so how can I have abandoned something I've never had?

The surgery is nothing more then a tool to achieve this "middle ground". You often hear the word "cheating" when talking about Weight Loss Surgery with others who can maintain a so called normal weight and who have never had a weight problem. WLS is seen as an extreme solution to the problem, it is an extreme solution, but it does work. I meet people, who have had the surgery, on a regular basis at support groups, and every single one of them has had a major battle with food for most of their lives and surgery is seen as the last ditch hope for a normal life by many. Would you say no to a drowning man when you are standing on the bank with a life saver in your hand?

If my views are a little extreme its because I've been there and found that that teeshirt that is meant to fit all, never really does!

        Extremities

        Hi Puffin

I was afraid you'd take my use of 'extreme' in a way I didn't intend. I used it in the sense of black and white being at the extreme ends of the grey spectrum.

For any offense you may have taken, I apologise. In no way do I wish to make light of your struggle.

I'm looking for a way different to yours - and it may or may not include one of the franchised weight loss programmes in which you have no faith. Will you give me space to find my way?

Don't worry Tigers, I was in a strange state of mind a little earlier today, my problem not yours, sorry. As I said at the end of a previous post on this thread, by all means try to loss weight, but just be aware of the long term pit falls with these programmes.

          Good luck.

            3XL

            Hi puffin

I have several pit fall T-shirts - ranging from XL for the oldest ones to 3XL for the more recent ones. This is why I am so wary of proceeding before I have my head around the problem. I am with wytco0 and firmly believe that without the right psychological approach I would be doomed to failure again.

Unfortunately, seeking the right approach is also a great way of staying stuck, right where I am. So it seems I also need a motivational kick in the butt!

              Losing Weight

Just have a spare hour to read threads, Big Biffa Chelle here and still getting bigger! 6yrs ago I was 9and a half stone, now 4 stone heavier and with an unsympathetic doctor, I hate myself. I have many medical problems, Bipolar, Osa, Hypothyroidism and Arthritis to name a few. I take Lithium and Citalopram, also Thyroxine. I'm not very active as i have not long had a fusion done on my foot which has not recovered yet. I feel like coming off all medication and going it alone, but I know this is not an option. If anyone can help, I've been doing Slimming world for 2 years and it has cost me £100's to lose 3lbs! Apart from chopping my head off I am stuck in a FAT rut. I hate being like this and know how you all feel. I thought I knew all there was about losing weight, dieting and Healthy eating, but obviously not.

                Going down!

Rather amazingly - or so it seems to me - I've lost nearly 5 kg!

I haven't spent a penny on anything (except a book I have yet to read!) but I do seem to have gotten my head round a very basic concept - if I want to lose weight, I have to say, "No" every now and again, regularly. I'm not giving myself a hard time over denying myself the 'goodies' and I reward myself with praise when I successfully decline the temptation to 'graze' - and I enjoy the goodies when I don't.

A little less of this, a little less of that - and my weight is reducing! Hurrah!

A friend went on to that Slim Sure progamme/program and it all looks far to complicated to suit me and anyway looks like common sense wrapped in scientific language with seeds spinkled over every meal. Not to be over critical as I may yet have to see if it could help me!!

What do I want most? a mince pie (continued obesity) or to lose weight (and move toward better health)?

For a no brainer, that mince pie can look mighty tempting around 9 pm!!!!

You can print an image of a mince pie on a transparent sheet and beam it on a bowl of no fat yoghurt The mind is powerful, if it thinks you are eating a pie, it may well taste like a pie (though on that same note, might also put on calories like a pie).

Well, I did a pulseoxy test over night, last night. Returned it to the clinic 8.30 am this morning. The result????

I no longer have mild OSA, I only had 6 dips all night. The clinic does not treat below 10 dips. So they had my machine back off me as I do not need it again. And the comment as I left the clinic was, as you loose more weight because of the Weight Lose Surgery the 6 dips will reduce even further.

                            Weight Loss

I have just read all your replies and advice on Weight Loss. I posted a reply to this on the 6th Nov and can't see it anywhere. So heres hoping I post this one right! I have also been dieting nearly all my life. I used to agree that losing the weight was the easy part and keeping it off is hard, but I have changed my mind. I am now 4 st overweight and I hate myself. I battle with OSA every single day, like yourselves. I have no energy, lack motivation, I look horroble in all my clothes and feel like I am constantly dieting. I have to take medication for Bipolar and an underactive Thyroid, and I think ( no, I am sure) that this is the cause of my weight gain. I struggle with Bipolar as I head "south" most of the time and this gives me similar symptoms as the ones from OSA. So i find I am on a losing streak before I even start to diet. I also have the Paul Mckenna book but have only listened to it once. I would love to have WLS but I am not morbidly overweight and cannot afford to have this done privately. Anyone got any answers?????

Don't worry I shall be poping in every now and then, turns out the OH may have OSA, she has seen the consultant this week, he has ordered the usual tests. He called me into the consult to ask me about the OH's sleeping patterns and was happy with my replies. Asked me how I knew so much about OSA. So I told him my story and that I'd lost 40kg which he looked very suprized about, until I mentioned the Weight Loss Surgery.
