  • Sleep Anxiety

Hi guys. I am new to this forum. Hope you are all well. I have recently been having some increased anxiety and i was wondering if anyone else out there can relate or advise. I have been on cpap therapy for a good six odd years and i use my machine everytime i sleep. In April after my wife mentioned i was snoring again and i started getting some more mini choking episodes my pressure was increased to 13 from 11. This was helpful but again my wife has been saying for a month or so im snoring. Earlier this week i had a very scary awakening where i was unable to breath and was choking badly. Since then i have gone back to feeling anxious and i cant even sleep im so afraid it wil happen again.

The issue is when i become this anxious i somehow think if i sleep in smaller chunks i.e. i sleep for 2 hours and wakeup with an alarm i will wake myself up from a potentially deeper sleep and so less likely to get a choking episode. I know this sounds crazy but it helps me break down the night instead of visualising a choking episode deep in the night. The other thing ive tried is to not sleep on my back but no matter what i put behind me, tensi balls, rolled up towels, bags i end up sleeping on my back somehow.

My question is how can i stop being so afraid? Im so scared of sleeping. How can i stop sleeping on my back which seems ro be when im more likely to have an episode. Cpap practioners have said its unlikely pressure increase required more likely mask. Also the latest episode was when i had a cold. Thanks for any responses.

    Good Morning,

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for your post.

If the symptoms of OSA are coming back that the CPAP machine and mask are not working as well as they used to for you.

Can I kindly ask which CPAP machine and mask do you have?
Do you get a good seal/fit with your mask? - If this leaks, then this will affect your sleep data
How old is your mask? - Sometime the mask deteriorates over time and the cushion may need replacing.

I completely understand that you are feeling anxious and are worrying about going to sleep. Let see what we can do to help you to get your machine and mask working well for you.

    Kelly
