  • Atrial Fibrillation caused by sleep apnea

I`ve been using CPAP for 4 yrs and managed to keep the apneas down to less than 5 a night (which is what the clinic request).

Last week my heart went into overdrive, had ECG and told atrial fibrillation, prescribed beta blockers and blood thinners. Palpitations have reduced slightly now but breathlessness bad. In the lead up to this episode my nightly apnea readings had been high - in the 30s and 40s and I wondered if this caused the heart failure.

I thought CPAP was supposed to protect against apneas but obviously something went wrong - I have an appointment with the sleep clinic next month but wondered if anyone else had had heart trouble because of sleep apneas.
