  • Chest pain, anyone?

OK - almost 1 week into using an APAP with nasal mask. One feature I've found with the higher pressures that kick in on the APAP is that I breathe with a greater inflation & deflation than I would normally have done before - not saying it's a problem as shallow to non-breaths was the main reason for me checking this out in the first place. But the issue is that after about 4-5 hours I get pains across my chest - they're external, muscular strains across the upper rib cage. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it "normal" and expected at the start of a new way for your body to breathe?

    Alan.

Yes, it is normal, and the good news is you normally get through it in a few days.

With your CPAP or APAP you have to work harder to breathe out, meaning the muscles in your chest are working harder. As with starting any new exercise, at first your muscles complain a bit and get stiff and sore, but as they get stronger and adapted to the new exercise the pain goes away.

as fred says, welcome to proper breathing.

You'll soon get used to it, I love waking now to the deep regular breathing instead of the short gasping.
