    Show us yer numbers!

I've been on CPAP now since last november, have just called up my stats and here's the numbers:

AHI - at sleep study 51
AHI after a month on CPAP 2.4
AHI now (average of last month) 1.1, many nights at under 0.5

Longest continuous use in first month- 5hr 17min
    Longest this month - 10hr 30 min (!) (average 7h 30m)

    Basal SpO2 last nov 92.6
    Basal SpO2 now 93.4

Avg pulse last nov 80, lowest 65
Avg pulse now 75, lowest 49

So that's the numbers, which back up the fact that I'm no longer tired in the day!

    Result!

My AHI at sleep study >45 (they didn't note actual figures over 45).

My AHI on Auto CPAP average 1.5, lowest figure 0.2.

    Chuffed!

Just been talking to a man who did a multi-channel respiratory study with us showing an AHI of 72 (obstructive apneas at least every minute). Went on to a SleepCube and after a few days the AHI is already down to 10 and he is feeling great, better than ever in recent history. I'm sure we can get it to 5 soon too.

Love those stats, but love the story behind it even more.

Mine are still terrible. 21.8 over 7 day average. I have been using it since April, when it was 35, average. I am getting very dispondant about the whole thing. It is not the mask. It fits really well, full face. Any help would be appreciated.

I have ordered an oximeter, does that mean I can find out my AHI now?
My cpap which is a resmed S8 escape 11 doesn't record anything other than hours used.
I want to find out how I am doing, I am guessing that this is the right way?

What you get with the pulse oximeter is the number of times your blood oxygen drops by a given amount, or the number times your pulse rate increases by a given amount. Those are effects you would get from an Apnoea or Hypopnea, so the number of these events per hour gives an indication of your Apnoea Hypopnea index (AHI). It is an indication of the AHI, but not actually the AHI.

What you can also see though, and this is potentially more useful information, is how the events are dispersed across the night. If you have no events for the first 5 hours of the night, then 30 in the last hour, you still got 5 hours undisturbed restful sleep even with an AHI of 5.

No. An oximeter will tell you your Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI). This can be quite closely related to AHI but is not a direct substitute. The idea is that if you stop breathing, you stop taking in oxygen so your blood oxygen saturation drops. So Apnoea -> Desaturation. But not all apnoeas and certainly not all hypopnoeas lead to a desaturation so often ODI is underreported to AHI.

It's the most affordable way to get a decent indication. But you can't draw absolute conclusions based on it alone. But if you show a flat oxygen trace high in the nineties, it sure would be a good sign.

Umm, well yes, I have, but I am blonde and I don't profess to know everything, especially when it comes to technical stuff.
Believe it or not I am the "lead super user" for pc software at work but away from it I am super rubbish!

The oximeter arrived today and I have spent the last hour getting the strap attached! I am working my way through the instruction manual and hope to suss it out by November....... 2015
I just tried to put the date in and gave up and came on here instead
Can't one of you lovely members come and live in Crawley cos then I could ask you to come and explain it to me.
I might spend the night reading the manual rather than a proper book.

Never mind, Lorraine! Have another go in the morning and it'll behave itself and do as you want it to.

Have you got the software installed and working?

When you come to start recording, get all ready for bed but don't put your mask on and do leave your specs on (assuming). It makes date setting look like child's play!

I did mean to put a smiley at the end of that comment by the way, not meant in a bad way at all, just poking fun. Die-hard stats are a topic some people just don't have much interest in, and that's absolutely fine. It's certainly not a requirement for CPAP success.

I know you weren't serious James.
But, I really do want to understand it all. I will get the hang of it, I am just being impatient as usual.
I got the date set now, so that's another step in the right direction. Just need to know how to record and I will be there!
Reading the recorded bit will only be a problem when I come to do it, my way of thinking is to go one step at a time.

I will let you know how I get on but it will be a long drawn out story!

                            Night night everyone

My stats don't look so good, but still feeling much improved with CPAP:

AHI - at sleep study 83
AHI - after 2 weeks on CPAP 17.5
