  • 2 weeks now!

    Hi guys,
I've been using for just over 2 weeks now.. My headaches have gone but I still feel tired. Had some issues with the mask leaking but bought some of those zzz cloths and it sort of helped. I wonder if the pressure is set too low at 11 though? I'm back for my follow up appointment tomorrow so any advice would be welcome

How many hours per night are you managing? Will be interesting to see what they say at your followup.

I'm using it for an average of 5 to 6 hours (one night I used for 8 hours but still felt tired).

        Not enough info!

        Hi mentalfog

It's hard to help with no info! You don't even say what sort of machine and mask you are using, let alone pressures and AHI (but you may not know these).

Wild guess, stab in the dark - (assuming CPAP) clinics tend to send people home with too low a pressure so I'm guessing that you need your set pressure increasing OR (assuming APAP) they sent you home with the machine set wide open (Pmin = 4cm and Pmax = 20cm) and you need the band narrowing.

If I guess correctly, odds on they will look at you blankly and then tell you I don't know what I'm talking about - in which case, you need to find out how to adjust your machine for yourself. Google "name-of-machine clinicians' menu" and look at American sites.

          Hi again,
Sorry, the machine is a Resmed Escape 2 and the mask I use is a mirage quattro. I cant seem to find any settings on it and all I was told is it was set at 11.
I'll see if I can find something on that site you suggested.

If they are saying it is "set to 11" then it is CPAP, and 11 is a pretty average setting, especially in the "lets just guess a setting" world of some sleep clinics.

From the fact that some of your symptoms have improved it sounds to me like your machine is not too far from being set right, but it does sounds as if you maybe need to have the pressure slightly higher.

I would suggest if you think the setting is too low, talk to them at the clinic about it and see if they will adjust it, or on what basis it is set to 11. If they are helpful and discuss it with you properly, considering your concerns, then their advice is probably the best to follow. If you have a helpful clinic, keeping on the right side with them is a good move to continued support.

If their attitude is just "well, the right pressure for you is 11, just get on with it", then the advice to find how to set the pressure yourself may be helpful. If you do change the pressure yourself, do it in little steps giving it a few nights to see before you go further.

Well done on the 5-6 hrs, but I suspect that it may be that the pressure is not right, and maybe you could do with getting some longer sleeps! Certainly for me getting a few 8hr+ nights got me back to being well again, and now I find I need 7 hrs to be at my best!

                Hi everyone again,
Went to the hospital today for my review, it was indeed set too low so he turned it up a notch to 12. Now it feels more like it (I had a couple of hours sleep with it when I got home). The average time in use was 6.23 hours per day. I also managed to get a quattro fx mask too which I tried out this afternoon. I found the fx near impossible to get a leak no matter which way I moved so I'm looking forward to a great nights sleep tonight

As it is virtually impossible to make the Quattro FX leak, I'm guessing you have not watched the fitting video on the Quattro FX site. It's a completely different technique to other masks so the video is well worth watching.

There are a few videos on the site and a lot of info can be garnered.

Hey no worries guys, you are all helpful!
Yup, I seen the fitting instructions on the website and follow the instructions to the letter. But alas, I've got a problem with the FX too I'll post it in the masks section of the forum..
