  • Hiccups with CPAP

    Hey everyone

Ok now this is probably gonna sound like an odd question but I've looked through the forums and can't find anything about this before now (if you know of a thread, please do let me know!)

In the last couple of months since using my CPAP machine properly (effectively) my colleagues, family, friends and I have all noticed a significant increase in hiccups. I used to only hiccup once occasionally, but it's increased significantly, especially in the last few weeks.

Has anyone else had this happen? Am I alone? Does anyone know of any studies out there or literature about CPAP and hiccups? I'm raising it with my GP on Monday when I go about something unrelated, but I was just curious what your experiences might be with the dreaded giggle-makers!

    Cheers

      If .....

      Hi Kaele74

Ever since my corner shop changed hands and was re-opened I've noticed that I get hiccoughs more often than when the shop was run by its previous owners.

I don't know what causes my diaphragm to spasm these days but do you think I should go punch the new owner of the shop?

Why doi you blame the CPAP for your hiccups?

I wasn't blaming CPAP for my hiccups. I was asking if anyone else has noticed any change for them since they started with CPAP, and whether anyone is aware if anything has been published about a possible correlation between the two.

I'm talking to my GP about it next week because I know it could just as easily be something completely unrelated, otherwise I would just go see the nurses at the sleep clinic and question them.

          hiccups

          Hi K74--
I typed in hiccups under Search and found one person who apparently had hiccups also, It may just be related to nerves and not the actual CPAP. Wearing a mask and going through all the stuff involved can be stressful--that might cause hiccups. The same thing might apply to TF and the new store owner--change causes stress, Personally I'd like to see you punch him, as I am just in THAT kind of mood today. If you weren't clear across the ocean I might be willing to punch him for you. BAH HUMBUG--BAD HAIR DAY--NO GUTS NO GLORY! Berneta

            Stay home!

            Hi Berneta

This forum just gets better and better! Now I have two women offering to punch people out for me!

But stay home, Berneta - the 'he' shop owner is, in fact, three generations of Filipino women and all are very friendly and bright.

Here's hoping you have a better day tomorrow - good to see another side to you, though!

              Nuts

Hi TF--you're just a popular guy-- and far enough away to be safe from my actions. Its a long way to England, and my broom isn't flying very fast right now. LOL. I am growly, grumpy, and in a nasty mood. But I don't think I want to rumble with 3 poor little ladies. I am just tired, and short tempered right now (Usually very laid back and easy going) But I have not slept well for several nights. Its not the CPAP or Mask. Some things the CPAP just won't fix. The Hickory Tree next to my bedroom is dropping huge Nuts onto the roof. They thump like huge stones and sound like thunder rolling off the house. This goes on for about two weeks every fall. I wake several times a night because the tree is so overloaded with nuts this year, Heavy rains and hot weather make lots of nut growth. I'd have it cut down, but I like its heavy shade in the Summer--it cuts the heat from the setting sun. So don't get all intimidated and scared--I will stay home--at least till I get my broom fixed. LOL, Berneta

                A thought

                Hi Sweetpea

Have you ever thought of stretching chicken wire over your roof under the hickory tree - a few inches above the roof. OK so hickory nuts aren't that big, use a finer mesh. For two weeks, even plastic netting would do.

Do the nuts drop more loudly since you started CPAP, have you noticed?

                  Thanks Berneta

It's not nerves and it's not the mask. I came to terms with it some time ago and although I never expected it at the beginning (3 months... wow is it THAT long???) I find a strange kind of comfort with it now. The constant, soft, breathy sound it makes is actually quite soothing to me, too. It took a while but we became friends

I'll get some answers when I see my GP (I hope). In the meantime I'll just let people laugh at me every time it happens. Either that or tell them to stuff off in my oh-so-butter-wouldn't-melt fashion

If it's any consolation, for various reasons my temper meter has been way over its limit recently too. Hoping I'm able to keep it at bay for nice people on here

                    Temper Tantrums

Hi K74--yes it is some comfort to know that my temper is not going off alone. I wonder if the CPAP is making me more aware of what is happening? I seldom wake up in a foggy daze anymore. The nuts didn't bother me so much in the years before. Maybe I am just annoyed that the sleep that I am finally getting is disturbed, I hope that you can get some answers when you get to question someone on the staff--but I wouldn't count on it. It seems to me the people on this forum know more about sleeping with CPAPS-- than do the ones that usually give them out. I think everyone who give out the CPAPS and MASKS should be required to wear one for at least a week before they are qualified to handle them. I wish you luck on that--since hiccups can be so troublesome, and sometimes last a long time. Just save the spitting fire for someone who really needs melted down! LOL
TF--the Chicken Wire probably would not hold the nuts-- they are about 5 inch in circumference with the hull on and very heavy. This is not the regular small bitter pig nuts, that people often see--these are large and sweet tasting. Hulled they are about the size of an English Walnut but much heaver. I think they would just roll on the wire, and eventually would weigh the wire down in spots--they are heavy enough to tear through plastic. The tree is huge and the wire would probably just divert them, and make them roll all over roof. Right now they just land above my room and don't cross the whole roof. the roof peaks and slopes down over my room. I think I'll just have to put up with them--although sometimes it does sound like a log is rolling on the roof. In another week they should all be down--so I may just start taking an afternoon nap in the living room. That won't bother anyone. The guys will be bow hunting deer all day now that the hunting season has started here. We have fine big record bucks in our woods around the Oak Trees, that are dropping tons of acorns. Its a Deer Hunter's Paradise. We will fill our freezers. Thanks for the advice though, x Berneta

                      hiccups and CPAP

I would like to know if there is anyone can give a reason too. I used my CPAP for only one week. I was waken up two nights by hiccups while I was using the machine. In the past, I had no experience of hiccups in the middle of the sleep. I would definitely say they are related. Also, the hiccups just disappeared immediately the moment I sat up.

                        Hi,

I’m a new kid on the block. My husband has OSA and has been using CPAP since 2014 with machine supplied through NHS via Philips. I have a strange question. Last night, at about 2 am, my husband started hicupping in his sleep. He didn’t wake up, his breathing was still even and the machine was doing its job, but he was hicupping every few seconds and still sound asleep. Question is, should I have woken him? I left him asleep, as I was worried what was going on but stayed awake for about an hour. The CPAP seemed like it was at its normal pressure, not ramped as it is when he’s deeply asleep, so we don’t think it was the settings, which he has just had checked at the sleep clinic. Is this cause for concern, or just one of those things?

On questioning him this morning, he dreamed that he had hiccups and didn’t recall waking. I’m on stand by tonight to see if it happens again but I thought I’d just ask the question.

                        Thanks

                        Goldiewing xx

                          Hello Goldiewing,

                          Thank you for your post.

I have spoken to our sleep technician about your post and they have advised that they have not heard of this happening before. If it is not affecting your husband CPAP therapy, then there is no concern. You can look at increasing the exhalation relief setting on the CPAP machine to see if this makes a difference. Do you know what CPAP machine your Husband has?
