  • AHI

My AHI before CPAP was 48.8 but the last few nights i've been averaging AHI of 2.1 (think due to a new Quattro mask too). Therefore I was wondering should I aim even lower or is 2.1 fine? If I should aim lower are there any tricks that can help?

    Hi Aracas!

As far as I am aware the aim is to get your AHI below 5, so 2.1 is more than fine! I'm not sure how you could get the figure any lower apart from perhaps having the CPAP data analysed at your next appointment to see if the pressure might need tweaking slightly to keep your airways open?

Alternatively check that your mask is fitted correctly to reduce leaks as much as possible and ensure any features you may be using like EPR, ramping and humidification are comfortable for you to ensure a good night's sleep.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have an AHI of zero on CPAP or is there always the possibility of an event or two in the night?

    Cheers

That's a great result and no, don't be worried about lowering it further. Sub 5 means it's under control though around 3 would be a perfectionist's target. Even no-OSA people will clock over 0 AHI so much lower than what you have there is unrealistic anyway. Just aim at keeping it like that and you're doing very, very well.

If you are a stats-hungry CPAP addict, talk to Tigers Fan about off the beaten path ways to lower it further. He has done the analysis and tried it all.

But really, don't make it an obsession, 2.1 is brilliant.

        Hi Aracas

As James says, 2.1 is a fantastic result. I assume you get a consistent 2.1-ish?

To get below that, you would need to consider your sleeping arrangements, pre-sleeping activities, exercise generally and diet. 0 AHI is for the mortuary.

If you really want to chase stats, try your VSI - that really is like chasing fairies round the garden.
