  • General anaesthetic while on cpap?

Has anyone had a general anaesthetic since using their cpap?

I need to have surgery which is not related to the OSA and I was wondering if anyone else had gome through this and if they put your mask on you straight after you come round from the op?

    Thanks

I had a cartilage op on my knee

... last November. It was done privately on my health insurance, and they ended up doing it under epidural because of the OSA. They were concerned about the night following if I had had a General Anaesthetic - anything which makes you sleep more deeply can make you have more apnoeas. I would suggest you talk to your Drs - particularly the anaesthetist.

        Surgery

I had NHS surgery for cancer some eight years ago. The surgery was very invasive and it took over four hours and I came through it OK. Strangely enough I now require gall bladder surgery, which is comparatively trivial, and the Nuffied Hospital has turned me down because of the apnea. Thank goodoness for the NHS who have agreed to take me on.

          Hi Corndolly,

Did you know you had OSA when you had your op 8 years ago? Where you using cpap at the time?

            Hi All,
It seems that having OSA does not stop you having surgery.
Today I have been told that I have been accepted for a gastric by pass. I should have the op in about 8-10 weeks.
The OSA does make a difference but as long as you are compliant it is ok!
I read on here that someone had it done but I forget who it was.

Good news is that my heart problem, asthma, diabetis and high blood pressure should be a thing of the past after surgery!

Of course I am scared but at least I have a chance of a longer and healthier life if it all goes well.

            Regards

Yes I had already been using a CPAP for two years. It was quite a novelty on the ward, most of the doctors and nurses had never seen one before. Many of them didn't even know what sleep apnea was. When I came round from surgery my mask was already in place. The Nuffield told me they wouldn't operate as they had no means of resusitation in place for me!!! Incidentally I had been referred to the Nuffield by my GP and would have had my bill paid for by the NHS.

                Hi Corndolly,
Thanks for getting back to me, it makes me less nervous about the surgery

When I was given my cpap in hospital in Jan this year (I was there with a chest infection) they had to move me from one ward to another because the nurses there did not know, and could not help with the cpap if there was a problem.
Thing was; on the new ward they had never seen one either and asked me not to use it incase there was a problem. Makes you wonder some times.... at least I can see the rediculous side now!

I hope you are all recovered now and things are looking good for you?

                  Wat to go!

                  Hi Lorrraine

                  Good luck and bon chance!

My GP said wasn't heavy enough to warrant gastric surgery. Did he really mean I was to eat more chocolate? Good old NHS!
