  • Fun with the DVLA

Having seen some of the problems other people have had with the DVLA, I was cautious about getting my sleep assessment done before speaking to them.

I've only got mild OSA, but by the time I rang them, I'd already had the assessment and been on a CPAP trial for 4 weeks with my doctor confirming it was working. He also said he'd be happy to provide info for the DVLA if required.

The DVLA were intially reassuring, said I could carry on driving and mentioned that some forms would be coming out in the post to me to confirm details. These came a week later and I completed & returned them as well as advising my car insurers. I then sat back heaving a sigh of relief.

Imagine my surprise when I got a letter from the DVLA on the Bank Holiday weekend saying they hadn't received my forms so would therefore be cancelling my licence with effect from Tuesday 4th May. To add spice to this, their call centre wasn't working over the bank holiday weekend so the first day I could speak to them was the 4th!

Anyway, when I finally got through, they confessed that my original forms had since turned up - phew! I'm sure the timing of this was made more complicated by the bank holiday, but for anyone else in this position, you may want to ring them to confirm receipt, or send a copy by Fax (since they send you a reply by fax to acknowledge your message).

    Hmmmmm!

Sounds like Recorded Delivery might be a good idea - well worth a few bob extra, considering the importance of the papers.
