  • Is this sleep apnea? CHOKING AT NIGHT

    Hi everyone,

It has been suggested that I may have sleep apnea.

I sometimes wake up choking and can not breathe through my mouth, it makes a terrible noise and is VERY frightning. I breathe through my nose slowly and then the throat relaxes.

It happened 4 times in 2 hours a couple of nights ago, I was afraid to sleep and nearly went to A&E'

A lot of the time I am falling asleep and I just wake up with a jerk and am wondering now if it is my breathing as I start to drift off.

I always wake up to drink water and go to the loo, I find it very hard to walk up the stairs to the toilet and feel weak.

I done a test online and scored 15, I think it was epsom?

I shall try and get doc appointment as I have read it is dangerous and lead to death.

I imagine you wait ages for a test and treatment, How scarey.

    Thanks anyway

      Hi AngelJack.
From what you have described i would guess it is OSA but it's not that scary.Like you said, get an appointment to see you're GP he or she will ask you to do the epworth test and with a score that high will refer you to a sleep clinc(NHS).A simple test wearing an OXYMETER which simpley clips onto one finger is worn overnight and will tell if it is OSA and how many episodes an hour you are having.I can't stress to you enough what a difference the treatment makes to one's quality of life. So my advice is go for it ,isuffered for years without realising i had the condition .Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi. I've just been diagnosed with OSA and have my appointment to discuss CPAP next week. I waited about 2 weeks from first going to the GP to being contacted by the sleep clinic - I filled in a form about my symptoms and they replied after another week with an appointment for an overnight sleep study. So, no long waits. Don't know whether this is typical of all areas, however. I live in Sussex.

          Sounds like it could be

          Hi angeljack

You describe several of the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea but that does not necessarily mean you suffer from it. Only one way to find out and that begins with seeing a doctor. Thing is, not to hang about getting started because of waiting times to get a sleep study done.

            Hi everyone,

            Thanks for your replies.

I spoke to my doctor on the phone and she said as I am not that overweight ( 2 stone ) and that I am aware of my choking that it is not apnea. Sufferers are not aware of their breathing as they are asleep.

I also had rapid heartbeat which started around the same time as choking, hospital thought I had heart attack last year, It was first thing in morning and I felt light headed, my heart was so fast I was put on a monitor for the day.

Anyway I shall get it checked out as I am overweight, how overweight does somebody need to be for a doctor to think this is possible!!!

            Thanks
            Jack

              If only .....

Asleep so we are not aware? Even on CPAP an apnoea can startle you awake - bring you up from the depths very suddenly, not breathing. Methinks your GP needs to be up-dated in her thinking about OSA. We are not aware of a lot, most of, our events - OK. But choking!? My cats say its like coughing hair balls - they notice!!

                Hello tiger!!!

Bet your cats love a tiger around!!!

I went to see one of the other doctors today, he wants my partner to record me snoring and put on a dvd!!!

What a joke, my other half has trouble using a mobile phone even, Ha Ha Ha
My son or daughteringinlaw will catch it one day on moby.

Doc said most sleep apnea patients are more overweight, but I do need to lose 2 stone. He said that many apnea sufferers have big necks!!!

                Heres to my weight loss!!!

                I keep you all informed.

                  Hello angeljack

I would like to say that I can directly relate to the symptoms you describe. My god what an awful experience it is too. Blind panic and sat bolt upright gasping for breath whilst making an awful noise.
If it helps, my consultant diagnosed acid reflux which over time damages the throat. What you describe is excess acid refluxing back up your gullet and into your throat. As a result the throat goes into spasm.

This incidental is how I got the diagnosed with OSA

The consultant prescribed pills and a large bottle of Gaviscon duo which seems to be working fine for me.

                  Please do seek help
