  • What does high "VSI" mean?

I just got the EncorePro software to track how I'm doing with this new "hobby" I've had for 3 months now (using CPAP and trying to find the perfect mask!) My Vibratory Snore Index (VSI) is in the 400s and 500s every night. I read on one forum that VSI measures how often you snore - could this be true? How could I possibly snore that much with a CPAP mask on? I'd sure appreciate any information anyone could provide. Thanks!

    A whole new ball-game!

    Hi SleepyJudy

    and welcome!

Back when, I had a go at chasing my VSI downward. Had the rig tickety-boo, AHI on the ground - let's have a go at VSI, then! Seems there are that many factors affecting it that you may as well try to catch the wind!

Yes, your VSI is high. So what? Is anyone complaining? AHI is what it is all about - keep chasing that downward and the rest will take care of itself.

Having said that - or, I only say that after discovering .... - the cause of my high VSI was my mask strap adjustment being too tight, causing my lower jaw to be pushed back into my throat/airway, countering the effect of APAP. Even with that sorted and for no other apparent reason, my VSI stilll zoomed heavenward periodically. I'm now using an NHS CPAP and have not the vaguest idea what my VSI is - or my AHI, come to that. All it tells me is that I 'comply'. I know my AHI is low because of my dreams (lots of) and the way I feel each morning - well, most mornings. My snoring? - compared to what it used to be, a mere snuffling, occassionally.

I've had no problems with my VSI since I've using my CPAP and in fact, have been very happy with its' performance and benefit to me.

very seriously ill. Army designation for those troopers who may die without immediate and definitive medical care. well it can also be Vertical Speed Indicator: (or Variometer) measures the rate of clime or ascent by determining the rate of change of barometric pressure. Not generally necessary.
