Now that CPAP is recognised by the NHS are we entitled to replacement masks on prescription even if we bought the machine ourselves?
I ask as mine is a year old and probably due for replacement.
    Thanks

Some sleep clinics will indeed hand out free masks to those who were diagnosed by that sleep clinic but where the lcinic itself recommended buying privately, due to funding or timing issues. I doubt all clinics will be happy to hand people with privately bought machines unless they still go to that clinic for regular check-ups etc. I suspect it's very much a case by case basis, see how relaxed the consultant or nurse is about it.

In principle, I'd say you are right. In practise, as with many things 'government', I highly doubt it!

And yes, when a mask is approaching it's birthday, it's often on its way out. Here's some great background reading on that topic, with some amazing conclusions:

There are is a lot of good research going on in the world sleep apnea medicine as evidenced by the "posters" or abstracts of research presen...

Conclusion: This pilot study suggests there are high counts of bacterial and fungal flora on CPAP interfaces, despite routine washing, with the older interfaces, more contaminated and resistant to cleaning.
The message here is to clean your mask regularly and to replace the mask at least every six months.
