I can't remember which mask it was but for a while I slept with a polo shirt on, collar up, to remedy just what you described.
You could also try and attach the back strap to the top one to prevent it from sliding down.If you can read this...
...at least you seem to be getting enough sleep to stay awake and alert!

Looks like they have a softer headgear option:
Originally posted by ResMedThe AeroFix II is a particularly soft and flexible headgear product. It simplifies mask fit and is remarkably comfortable to wear.
With the AeroFix II we have optimized key features and you will immediately notice the benefits:
* Wider and shorter straps gently conform to the shape of your head, and can be fastened quickly and easily.
* The soft, elastic material adapts to the movements of your head, ensuring a secure and stable mask fit.
* The shorter component for the back of the head ensures a much better fit—enabling you to sleep more comfortably.
* The new black clip fastener greatly simplifies handling. It can be quickly opened and closed, making it easy to put on and take off the mask.
Worth a try perhaps?

The standard mirage headgear looks the same but isn't the same. My ultra mirage headgear was quite thin (strapwise) and although I wasn't badly affected by it, I noticed it when on.
Getting the fit right is hugely important. I find the headgear puts pressure in odd places if not fitted well and may cause the problems you describe. When the mask is fitted it feels balanced and requires much lower pressure to get a good seal. Given that, I found the Resmed Ultra Mirage kit not as good as the later Quattro gear.
Otherwise try covering the straps with a soft material..Last edited by Joe McManus; 18 October 2007, 10:28. Reason: Overactive spam control censored 'Ultra'Mart -- Happy CPAP User since 2005.

I used to have the same problem, my neck was red raw and I was in agony, got nowhere with the clinic or the doctor, eventually by a huge stroke of luck found out one night in the pub, my mates partner was a seamstress, she made some pads which fasten arount the straps with velcro, made of very soft washable material, sorted my problem out briliantly.
