  • Husbands cpap mask makes farting noises, wont stay put.?

    Hi all. My husband was recently put on a fullface cpap mask for his sleep apnea (mask goes over mouth and nose). He was fitted for it and he wears a medium. He wears it maybe 5 minutes and it starts making a "farting" noise. He says he adjusts it quite a few times but there's always a spot that doesnt fit right and that's where the air leaks, therefor starting the fart/squeal sounds. Does anyone know how to correct this or if there's a better mask? The current one is a breathright i think. It has a gel lining around the mask also.

    How's the nose pads work? I've heard of them. The reason he needs the full face one is, he's a mouth snorer. We've tightened straps, moved the forehead guard, nothing helps.

    Tell him to try the nose pad. It just fits in your nose kind of like an oxygen mask does. I know what he means mine did that also until I got the nose one. Good Luck.

      I don't think a nose mask will work if he breathes through his mouth. He just needs a better fitting mask, probably one that canmould properly or a different model altogether.

        There are different types of headgear, like "deluxe" and extra "chinstraps". Maybe adding one of those to the contraption improves it. Otherwise he'll have to go and get it refitted or pick another mask.

          call the company that supplied the machine and explain the problem. they will help him to make adjustments.

            well he can tighten the straps or you can help by moving the mask till it fits him right, but sometimes the size is not right and there is nothing u can do, u can always ask ur health care provider or the respiratory therapist who helped u get it.

                Oooh that looks very flash. Actually I understand the farty noises and squeels.. I get them occasionally but I find this happens less when the mask is washed. I find that if the mask is allowed to get a bit sweaty the cushion tends to move more and sinks a bit on the face.. I often find myself pulling the mask off my face and reseating it before Im asleep for the same reason. Definately try good old washing!

                  This is a problem I have had, greasy skin lubs the silcon of the mask. Wash your face before sleeping and the mask every few days. Using non smelly wet wipes on your face and mask just before you go to sleep also can help if you are away from washing facilities.

                    I tend to use alcohol free wipes on the mask and face (even though I only have a nasal mask) otherwise greasy face sets in and the mask moves and the air leaks. Strangely, the best fitting mask I had (Respironics Comfort Gel) made the most noise when it leaked (whistled quite badly), which it did every time I lay down (fitted perfectly whilst sitting upright). My current Resmed Ultra Mirage (yes it is old and outdated) leaks occaisionly but just gives a cold jet of air to the eye without any "Wake the wife up" noises.....

                      Quality baby wipes do the trick for me. And a damp cloth every now and then works well too.
