    Hi
My Hubby is got a Resmed CPAP S6 nearly 4 years ago ..
The sleep clinic he got it from is now not going.
We have been looking on and off for the last few years.
Today he was told by the GP that he would have to buy a replacement mask at around £120 ish.
The mask he is using is Ultra Mirage full face mask size : medium standard cushion.
What I want to know is .... do I have to buy a new mask or can I just buy a cushion ( the clear plastic bit that rests on face)
    Also the headgear.
The one my hubby has is in a bad way.
We live in Cumbria and we cannot get any funding or how to go to another clinic to get free replacement CPAP bits.
Please if anybody has any ideas I would love to know them.
    Many thanks

    Hi,

My best suggestion would be to phone ResMed.

They have been a BIG help to me in the past and are very helpful.

Ask to speak to Sarah in the customer services department who is really helpful.

    Phone number is 01235 862 997

    Or e-mail [email protected]

    Hope this helps

    ChrisP

With forward-thinking manufacturers like ResMed, it's usually indee dpossible to get all the spare bits. However, pricing tends to work so that if you need a cushion and headgear, for an extra tenner or so you can have the whole new mask. A bit like printers and ink though not quite as bad.

      But definitely worth a call.

You can also ask around here or put "Wanted" request in the Classifieds section. Someone may have that mask but spare altogether and willing to send it off for next to nothing.

Re replacement Mask, what happened to NHS???

Surely now that the CPAP machines have been agreed by 'N.I.C.E.' you should not have to pay for this equipment? How are you presently being monitored? If you were to deteriate and your condition worsened, no one is going to notice and the GP would possibly be in serious trouble for not ensuring that your medical condition is not being monitored on a regular and reasonable time.
It might be best that you ask you GP to re refer you as you may need your machine re-setting, it will certainly need cleaning and inspecting for safety reasons? The liability here if something were to go wrong sounds awful to me. Hope that you can get somewhere on this.
There are strict Electrical Safety Laws in place these days and ALL CPAP machines MUST be electrically inspected and tested by a 'competant person' on a regular basis. Regular is generally accepted as being on an annual basis depending on the use the appliance is getting. As these are used every day, my interpretation would be that an ANNUAL inspection is essential. Remember, those who shout generally 'get-it' within the health service. Those that stay quiet, dont get it. I know thats complately wrong, but it how things are these days.
                Regards, Jon...

Jon, last time I looked, the mask was not an electical devise!

My Clinic just gives you a brand new mask each time. If like me, you have retained an old mask as a back up, then all I want is the silcon parts to bring the old mask up to spec. If this is viable? Also there are those that have purchased their kit privately so any savings over purchasing their new kit every 6 to 12 months is a plus.
                  Regards and Good Luck, Barry

                    Regular checks

Of course the Mask and Tube is not an electrical device! I understood it that your Doctor was not interested in refering you back to, or, to a new clinic so that not only could you get your Mask replaced but you could also have your machine checked not only for electrical safety, but also to see if its working correctly and have the Mask replaced.
When was it last opened and cleaned? When were the internal filters last changed? Are the internals 'Clean' and free from spreading bacteria into your lungs? I always thought that legionaires bacteria liked dirty stale water, then again I am no clinician.
Electrical insulation is rather like the lethal fumes from a gas fire, you cannot see it, smell it, hear it etc. Electricity can 'Track' along a buildup of dust and debris especially when damp or water is spilt(Got a Dehumidifier?) Insulation breaks down with wear, changeable temperatures and time.
All of us should be aware of these dangers, as I have said, I have read the Coroners reports. Its up to you to decide if its only your mask that needs replacing(Your life, or that of your wife or child who wants to investigate what that machine does and BANG!!! Its all over. Never ever be complacent with electricity, thats why we have these Laws to protect us and our children.
Admitidly, you stand little chance of getting a shock when using the machine, due to the pipe and Mask will not conduct electricity. Its when you handle the machine or its transformer when its plugged it that matters, thats when what I am trying to explain happens. Cables also get chaffed by furniture and a lack of care, you only need the tiniest of holes in the insulation of the cable to get a shock.
Hope that makes my point clear to those who read this.
                    Be careful. Jon

                      Are you sure?

                      Hi Jon

Are you sure that a 12V DC machine needs annual inspection for electrical safety? The 240 V AC power cord and transformer certainly will if they are supplied by the NHS.

As for machine routine cleaning, surely this is the responsibility of the user? I work on the principal that every time I use NHS funds, someone else is not going to get the opportunity - and I'm therefore careful about what I cause funds to be spent on me. As I understand it, the NHS is only free at the point of use - it costs a lot of money, which we all provide, to run.

But let's get this clear - a 12 V DC CPAP is not going to go bang and hurt someone, no matter how neglected (short of being in a gas filled room, anyway). Pun intended!
