I've just been diagnosed with severe apnea, having mask fitted Wednesday. How long normally do users have to wear them? Is it a lifelong thing, or do they effect a 'cure'?

The CPAP machine and mask helps reduces the number of sleep apnoea events. We would suggest using your equipment every night to get the most benefit out of the equipment.
Duration of sleep apnoea treatment depends upon the individuals and the severity of your sleep apnoea. Sometime by make lifestyle changes (ie weight loss), this can help.
It does depend on the individual.
