  • My new best friend: Resmed Quattro Air

Basically a Quattro FX with a head brace which stabilises the mask and stops it riding up (a big problem with the FX). The head brace is a flexible plastic strip which asks as a spring so no need for the tension adjustment screw that you get on the Mirage Quattro for example.

The 'Air' is about half the weight of the equivalent Quattro and consists of only four parts: frame, gel cushion, elbow with swivel and headgear. Exhaust air is diffused through two circular vents on the elbow.

    Downsides?

The bottom attachment is by hooking a loop in the Velcro strap over a post; I would have preferred the traditional Resmed delta clip. Its not too bad when you get used to it but will probably shorten the life of the headgear.

The mask is quite tricky to put on/take off. The best technique seems to be to press the cushion onto your face and then attach/detach the headgear.

    Upsides?

The most comfortable mask I have ever used; even better than the Mirage Liberty which has always been my favourite until now. It also seems to encourage nose-breathing which means that my mouth gets less dry (always been a problem even with a humidifier).

Other masks I have tried are:
F&P Forma, Resmed Mirage Quattro: both bulky and heavy
Quattro FX: comfortable but impossible to get a reliable seal
Sleepweaver Anew: badly designed, badly made and basically useless
Swift FX: not suitable for me because I can't keep my mouth shut!

Thanks for the review Grumpy. Did you buy the mask yourself, or is it from the NHS?
    Kind regards, Tricia

      I bought it myself

Needed new cushions for the Mirage Liberty (£30 + £25) so bought this instead (£120).

Thanks for the review Grumpy, we've heard a lot of good comments about the ResMed Quattro Air so far.

There's a Quattro Air For Her version as well Tricia, in case you were interested!

              back to the old favourite

I'm now getting leak problems with the Air so have gone back to the Mirage Liberty. Maybe the skirts aren't that resilient.

                Resmed quattro Air

                Hi
Just like Grumpy at first it is great and no major leaks but I have notice in the last few weeks that the mask is leaking more. Last night I gave up at 3am and changed to my mask to my full face mask which helped. The leak rate went up to 67% on 90% pressure. Normally the leak rate is around 15 - 30% over a week. Also I am starting to get rashes where around where the masks sit on the face and I do suffer from eczema which doesn't help. Is there a design fault with this mask as it worked so well for just over three months. I will try it again tonight to see if I can get the mask to stop leaking. I will try and use a face mask liner to see if that helps with the leaks and also the eczema as my eczema can be quite painful.

                  answer is Air x2

Bought a second one and swap them around every few nights; now a happier bunny.

Watching with interest. Had this about 5 or 6 months and so far no major problems. I would describe it aa more like a full face version of the mirage fx. The cushion isn't a gel one and is moulded to the frame so only really comes into 2 parts plus headgear. I find if you leave one side fastened when putting it on, then hook the second side. It is a bit fiddly at first.

                      More about the headgear

                      Hi everyone,
I have a query regarding the head straps of the Resmed Quattro FX rather than the mask itself. I've been using it now for 2 years and luckily happy with it, I get 6 hours of good sleep every night. I guess I'm aiming here at the more seasoned user than us apprentices but I'm wondering; has the shape of your head changed?
Strange question I know but I've noticed that my head now has 2 indentations on the top and 2 at the back! My mask is the large size but the straps are medium which I was assured is quite a common arrangement, I also have a full beard which means I have to have the straps a bit tighter than normal to prevent leakage.
I was wondering if any of you guys have noticed this and if it is likely to cause any further problems as time goes on?
