  • Problem With Using Resmed FaceMask

    Hi,

I was hoping someone out there could help with solving my problem with my mask.

I usually use a Resmed Quattro FX mask but I'm having problems using it.
I wake up about 4am gagging as my mouth is dry and feel like I'm choking I can't seem to keep my mouth closed, so I have purchased a chin strap in the hope that might solve it. Does anyone else have the same problem ?

When cleaning and trying to reassemble it I'm having massive problems, as I can only use one hand, is there another type that's easier to clean ?

    Thanks,

    Daryl

hi Daryl, I've been using the pilairo nasal mask lately. Pretty easy to put on as its only a single strap and there are only 2 bits to it. For washing I just dip it and swish it around , then hang it by its strap. it might work in conjunction with a chin strap.

      Hi Martin,

I tried my Resmed nasal pillows last night and found it hard to breath normally, while trying to keep my mouth closed using my new chin strap. I ended up wanting to breathe through my mouth. I must admit after a few minutes, I gave up is the Pilairo easier to breathe with ? I don't want to go back and end up using my old full face mask, if it's going to cause me problem using/cleaning it.

      Regards,

      Daryl

If you are a mouth breather you will need a full-face mask, or the hybrid mask that has Nasal Pillows coming out of the top of a mouth mask.

When I used a full faced mask I just used to wipe it down with a baby wipe.
I only cleaned it at most every month, even then I sometimes forgot. It was them, well, I will do it tomorrow. Tomorrow never came until the next wash was due sometimes I am still here and I didn't have bad breath to smell the mask up so it was fine.
Having one hand makes it difficult to clean masks and put masks on that have clips. You need to find headgear that you can pull over your head, most have clips now. Nasal Pillows as you will have found is the best for pulling over your head to get the mask on, but as you are a mouth breather I think you will need a full-faced mask. I used to breath through my mouth, but I had to train my brain that it had to breath through my nose at night. This took a while, but when I had the pressure increased it helped.

Best of luck in finding something that will work for you.
You only need to wipe the mask seal to clean it, unless there is dirt, mould, or the mask smells. Trust me, been there and done it and I am still here.
Keeping your face clean at night helps as well.
If you have a humidified may help to turn if up.
If your mouth opens at night, it may be that you will need a chin strap as well as full-faced mask to keep you mouth from opening and breaking the seal between the mask and your face.

Try what Martin suggests, mask with chin strap.

        God luck

          Hi Dazrodger,

Hopefully things have improved since you posted this thread, but if not it may be worth considering a humidifier if you are waking with a dry mouth. A heated humidifier helps moisten the air and is most commonly used for this very problem. Which machine are you currently using?

            Mouth breathing

I used to think I was an inveterate mouth breather and struggled with full face masks for nearly two years. I then tried the Sleepweaver when it first came out (only the nasal version) At first it wasn't a success but then one night, I just said to myself I will not breathe through my mouth and fell asleep with it on, and a year later am still not breathing through my mouth and happily in love with my Sleepweaver.

Nasal pillows stick up your nose and I didn't like them (I have tried many masks) but the sleepweaver doesn't. I can't explain how I changed but I know it is possible....

              Hi,

I already use a humidifier at level 29, but find the mask is leaking whenever I try to use it. Due to other medications that I have to take my mouth is permanently dry, even when I use my chinstrap to stop me mouth breathing
it feels like I can't swallow, which wakes me up.

I'm not currently using my machine as Im fed up trying to get a good seal with my quattro fx mask, I don't know what to do next

              Regards,

              Daryl

Hi Daryl, You need to get a mask that is right for you or at least the right size. Masks are where most people have problems, if you like the mask you have then it may be the wrong size. But you need to try others to see if you can get one that fits without leaking. The odd leak through the night is one thing, but if it leaks most of the time it is time you tried to get one that fits better.

Sleep2Snore is right in saying that is important to find a mask that fits you. It is completely normal for people to have to try various different masks in order to find one that is suitable; have you had many masks before using the Quattro FX or is this your first one? It may be worth looking into trying a different mask, or you could try something like mask liners for your current mask to combat the leaks and see if this makes a difference.

Were you supplied your current equipment through the NHS or did you buy them privately?

                    Hi,

I've only ever had 2 masks, the fx quattro full face & the nasal pillow one both supplied by the NHS. I did go back to them with the mask, and they gave me a new one but it's still giving me the leak problem. They weren't helpful at all about giving me advice on what to do, and gave me the impression that its up to me to buy another mask if I want a solution to the problem.

I'll give the mask liners a try.

Thanks for your advice everyone, its much appreciated.

Problem with the fx quattro full face

I have a problem with I think the Quattro full face mask & Hi 5.

I use a ResMed S9 Autoset, H5i Humidifier, Climate Hose & the Quattro Full face mask. I have the climate control set to auto on the S9 & temp set to max (30c) and I still get a dry throat, I must be doing something wrong.

The mask also keeps slipping, let me explain, I wear false teeth and when I have them out at night the bottom of the mask slips upwards & end up sitting on my lip instead of my chin, does anybody knows of a better mask I could try or should I try a strap to hold my chin up.

                      Andy

If your mouth opens it is logical to try a chin strap.
However, you can try just a bandage round your chin and over your head first just to try it, put it on before your mask, tighten it just enough so your mouth can't open. One of those slightly stretchy ones might work better.
You only need part of the bandage, just enough to go round and back to fix it in place with a safety pin on top of the head.
Climate tubes I have not used but I have read to turn the tube full up and then keep turning the humidifier up until problem of dryness stops. Maybe others will suggest something else when they arrive.

Thanks Sleep2Snore, I will give the bandage a go, but I don't really now if my mouth is opening, I have just thought to myself maybe I need a large mask, mine is med.

The bandage is the easy option to find out.
If mask seals before you fall asleep, either your chin is droping when your mouth opens or your headgear is to high on the head and slipping. Moving up and over the head and this is causing the mask to slip.

                              mask to try

The Mirage Liberty is worth a go; I find its the easiest mask to get a consistent seal with.
