I am a new cpaper and need something explained I have been given a resmed auto. About 2 hours into sleep the pressure increases dramaticly to about 16.5 and this wakes me up as the mask is lifting off my face. I also am suffering very puffy eyes is this because its blowing into them

The only drawback to APAPs is that they compensate for leaks, if you have a leak at the mask it will increase the pressure.
Try adjusting you mask while lying down, don't make the straps to tight, just enough to stop leaks, now start machine and check for leaks and adjust the straps just enough to stop leaks.
You may find that the mask has come loose in the middle of the night as I used to, just readjust the mask again and start again. Others may offer some more advice.

I use a dark heavy t shirt, combines light blockage and blocks occasional gusts of wind.

Contact your clinic and tell them what the problem is. One problem that can arise with APAPs issued to newbies is that the clinic may leave the settings on the manufacturer's settings, thus the range of pressure between 0 (zero) and 20. In my case then, were I to adjust my mask to fit at low pressure, when it automatically climbed to my 90% pressure of around 11 then the pressure change may wake me and the mask would almost certainly leak. To counter this my clinic adjusted my minimum setting to just below my 90% pressure reading, so instead of accelerating from zero to 11 it now gently adjusts upward from a minimum of 9.0. My mask being fitted at this pressure doesn't leak when the machine adjusts to 11 or above.
Problem this leaves some newbies with though, is that they may still want a low pressure to get off to sleep, in which case they will need to have the ramp adjusted to suit.

You dont mention what Resmed machine you have but if its a S9 it has a "mask fit test" which can help you to get the mask fit right.
