    Manufacturers of masks don't include parts that aren't necessary Eric. The design probably demands it as a safety feature or it wouldn't be there. Best play safe I reckon.

      Your "non-return valve" is an atmosphere valve. If you take the mask off a hose and put it on your face and thhen stuff your thumb/finger/cotton wool up the connector - you can still breathe. It's a safety device in the event of power failures.

      If you cannot breathe with the mask on, hose connected but the machine off, then there is a fault with the valve and you should replace it pronto/immediately.

      Trying to get a FitLife to seal with the machine running must be somewhere between extremely difficult and downright impossible!
